CUMMINGS LUMBER COMPANY SAWMILL FIRE - RISING FROM THE ASHES - Two Years Later

On June 25, 2024, Cummings Lumber faced a devastating loss. A fire tore through the sawmill, destroying the north end of the building. Fourteen fire companies responded heroically to keep the blaze from spreading, but by morning, the full weight of the damage became heartbreakingly clear.

Two years ago, we lost a building that housed 95 years of history. Today, we are proud to say that the Cummings family and team didn't just rebuild—we have come back stronger than ever.

The hurdles of recovering from a disaster like this are enormous. Managing payroll, taxes, and sudden inventory loss while trying to rebuild can easily shatter a small business. The fact that we are standing here today is a testament to President Scott Cummings' incredible leadership. During the cleanup and recovery, he made it his mission to keep as many employees working as possible. Because of that loyalty to our team, our spirit remained unshaken.

Instead of mourning what was gone, we chose to look ahead boldly—and that determination is reflecting in our steady growth and production numbers:

• Log Count: The number of logs sawn has steadily gone up since we fully resumed production.

• Kiln Capacity: Our kiln drying hours have increased to meet rising demand.

• Production Milestones: Our head sawyer is reaching new heights, breaking both her own personal milestones and mill-wide records for daily log counts.

As with many hardships, this tragedy brought with it an unexpected gift: overwhelming community support. We were embraced by friends, neighbors, and colleagues with a level of generosity we will never forget. Still, some losses leave marks that time cannot heal, but we are honoring our history by building a strong future.

Two years after the ashes settled, the next chapter of Cummings Lumber is officially underway, and we are proud of the progress we are making every day.

Now Hiring - Dryer Operator - Please Share!
Full Time | Mon-Fri, 7am-5pm

Barefoot Pellet Company is looking for a Dryer Operator to oversee and control the drying process of our premium wood pellets. You’ll help manage the system that turns our raw material into the high-quality pellets our customers count on!

What You’ll Do:
• Run and monitor the dryer system, adjusting temperature, airflow, and material flow to hit moisture and quality targets,
• Troubleshoot issues with the dryer and related equipment
• Perform routine maintenance to keep the system running smoothly and prevent breakdowns
• Track production data, quality checks, and maintenance activities
• Communicate with the rest of the production team on status, issues and adjustments
• Keep your work area clean and organized and assist with other pellet operations as needed

What We’re Looking For:
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot
• Attention to detail and a commitment to consistent quality
• Ability to communicate clearly with teammates and supervisors
• Physical stamina for standing, lifting up to 60lbs, and working in an industrial setting
• A safety-first mindset and willingness to follow OSHA and company safety procedures
• High school diploma or GED required
• 1-2 years of production experience in an industrial setting preferred

As we approach the holiday weekend, the teams at Cummings Lumber, Barefoot Flooring, and Barefoot Pellet Company want to take a moment to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Beyond the long weekend and the start of summer, Monday is a sacred day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We owe our freedom, our community, and our daily lives to their selflessness and courage. Our hearts and deepest gratitude go out to the gold star families who carry their legacy forward.

Please note that our facilities will be closed on Monday, May 25th, 2026, so that our employees can spend time with their families and properly observe this day of remembrance.
