MY BROTHER, MY HERO…
Some people fish. Others dedicate their lives to preserving a place, a tradition, and a way of life. Larry Young Anderson did all three.
Born on June 23, 1936, Larry developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors that would ultimately define his life’s work. In 1961, he purchased Centre Island South on Ontario’s legendary Lake of the Woods, transforming it into one of North America’s premier fishing destinations. For more than five decades, anglers from around the world traveled to experience not only the extraordinary fishing, but the warmth, knowledge, and hospitality that Larry and his wife, Alice, created together. The lodge became synonymous with excellence, and Larry earned a reputation as one of the most respected fishing guides on Lake of the Woods. He was recognized as a Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame guide, and his name became known throughout the sport-fishing community.
To those who knew him best, however, Larry was far more than an accomplished outdoorsman. He was a storyteller, a teacher, a steward of the lake, and a man whose deep respect for nature inspired generations of anglers. Whether someone was holding a fishing rod for the first time or had spent a lifetime on the water, Larry welcomed them with the same enthusiasm, patience, and generosity.
His influence reached far beyond the shores of Centre Island South. Friendships were forged in his boats, traditions were passed from one generation to the next, and countless memories were made because of the life he built. Even after passing the lodge to new owners, his legacy remained so significant that they described themselves as continuing the legendary standards established by its founder.
Larry passed away on July 13, 2026, at the age of 90.
He leaves behind a legacy measured not only in fish caught or trophies won, but in the thousands of lives he touched, the families who returned year after year, and the enduring love he had for Lake of the Woods.
Though he is no longer on the water, the wake he leaves behind will continue to carry his story for generations.
“A guide can show you where the fish are. A legend teaches you why you return.”
