The lights of the arts community seem a little dimmer as we mourn the passing of one of Tennessee’s greatest treasures, Dolly Parton.

At South Jackson Performing Arts Center, we believe deeply in the power of the Arts. A song can carry us back to a moment we thought we had forgotten. A story can help us understand someone whose life is completely different from our own. A performance can make us laugh, cry, think, dream and, sometimes, see the world differently.

Dolly Parton understood that power.

She was certainly one of the greatest entertainers and songwriters of our time, but her legacy reaches far beyond the stage. She used the success the Arts gave her to lift others. She supported education, literacy, communities in need and countless causes throughout her life. She had an extraordinary ability to welcome everyone, finding ways to bring people together rather than divide them. That is our goal at SJPAC as well.

The Arts give us a voice. They connect us. They preserve our stories. They inspire the next generation. And through people like Dolly, they remind us that our talents are not simply gifts to keep for ourselves, but opportunities to make the world around us a little better.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons Dolly leaves behind: never underestimate the difference one person can make.

Dolly Parton passed away Tuesday at the age of 80, but what she gave the world will continue for generations.

From all of us at South Jackson Performing Arts Center, thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter, the stories, the generosity and the example.

Tennessee gave the world Dolly Parton, and Dolly Parton gave so much of herself back to the world.

We will always love you.
