The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre destroyed the Greenwood District, and the people of Greenwood rebuilt it themselves. The number on this hoodie carries that whole story.

Ellis Walker Woods saw a flier recruiting teachers to Tulsa and walked roughly 500 miles from Memphis to answer it. He became the first principal of Booker T. Washington High School in Greenwood and held that job for 35 years.

First days of school are happening all over the country right now. Every one of them runs on people who decided a classroom was worth walking toward. If someone in your house is heading back this month, that walk is part of the story they inherit.

Before Black Wall Street had a name, it had a decision. O.W. Gurley bought land in the Greenwood District and opened it to Black families and Black business owners. From that decision grew theaters, salons, restaurants, whole blocks of Black-owned business, a community the world came to know as Black Wall Street.

IN 1911, BOLEY, OKLAHOMA HAD 4,000 RESIDENTS, 2 BANKS, 2 COLLEGES AND ITS OWN ELECTRIC PLANT.

It was an all-Black town, founded in 1903 on land allotted to Abigail Barnett, the daughter of a Creek Freedman.

The two colleges were Creek-Seminole College and Methodist Episcopal College. One of the banks is believed to be the first nationally chartered Black-owned bank in the country. The town also ran its own water system and ice plant.

Booker T. Washington visited and called it "the most enterprising and in many ways the most interesting of the Negro towns in the United States."

At statehood in 1907 there were 824 people. Four years later, over 4,000.

Then crop failures in the 1920s and the Depression hit. By 1930 the population was 874. Boley declared bankruptcy in 1939.

Today about 1,100 people live there. It is one of 13 all-Black Oklahoma towns still standing out of more than 50.
