Hi everyone! We have graduate assistantships available for next year for MFA candidates in Costume Design and Production!

If you know anyone interested in getting an MFA in costumes, send them my way! We will be at USITT next week - come by the booth!

The graduate assistantships work 20 hours a week in the costume shop on productions, and include a full tuition waiver including student fees, graduate health insurance during the 3 years of enrollment, and a monthly stipend during the academic year (totaling $15,800.00 for the 9 month contract, Aug 15th - May 15th).

The University of Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance has a 3-year non-theses MFA program in costumes that focuses on developing well rounded costume artisans. Our program does not focus solely on design or construction. The first year works on solidifying skills in both and then branches out in the second and third years based on the students’ areas of interest. The third year hones in on those interest areas with a 3rd year capstone project on a subject of the student’s choosing.

The 60 hour (minimum) track includes coursework in design, patterning/draping, rendering, portfolio, practical application, crafts, wigs, period costume construction, classical ballet costume construction, contemporary/stretch costume construction, tailoring, and more, with the opportunity to take courses of interest in other graduate areas like scenery and arts management.

There are also opportunities to teach undergraduate coursework, design costumes for both theatre and dance productions, and obtain certificates in museum studies or teaching in upper education.

Candidates must have an undergraduate degree and some work experience (work in theatre or dance costumes, or alterations, menswear, etc is preferable, but other work such as retail or customer service, teaching, etc is fine).

We had such a great time at Tutu School at IBC in June! I got to see friends and make some new ones, and I made a 19 layer roll-hemmed Firebird tutu with a bodice. It was quite the feat and is ALMOST fully complete! I’ll post a final picture when I get back racked up and the decoration on.

My most recent make - this is a birthday present for Evan’s best friend Bea who just had her first Birthday!

Her party was Winnie The Pooh themed (which was beautifully executed, complete with beehive and honey pot cakes!)

To go with her theme I chose this cute pastel yellow Pooh fabric I found online. I used Simplicity pattern 8304 and added additional lining in a pastel beige honey-comb print.

Isaac was so excited to give it to her!!
