Any room in the house can become a playroom, but the best location balances visibility, accessibility, and natural light.

If the living room is where the family naturally gathers, position the playroom as an extension of it, so children are nearby and parents can glance over while doing other tasks.

Children don't need to be taught to be curious. They only need room to follow where curiosity leads 🍃

You might not know the name Caroline Pratt, but if you’ve ever watched a kid deep in play with a set of unit blocks, you’ve seen her legacy in action.

In the early 1900s, Pratt designed and built the very first standard unit blocks for her own school, and they’ve been a cornerstone of early childhood classrooms ever since.

She was a constructivist through and through, which means she believed kids build real understanding by reconstructing the world around them through play.

Her original blocks were mathematical, open-ended, and totally child-directed, and over 100 years later, her design lives on - why mess with perfection?

The adult’s role in play based learning starts before the play does.

We choose materials that spark curiosity. We set up spaces that invite experimentation. We curate what’s available and protect the time to use it.

Then we step back and observe.

Sometimes we respond by shifting the space, adding a material, asking a new question. Sometimes we don’t respond at all, because the child already has what they need.
