Apollo Program lunar motorcycle testing (1960s)

During the Apollo program, NASA created and tested an electric lunar bike in tandem with the Lunar Rover.

The miniature motorcycle generated five-eighths horsepower which was coupled to a 30 amp-hour battery. The 90-pound bike could reach speeds of up to 7 miles per hour.

However, the concept was ultimately scrapped in favor of a more robust transportation system which was chosen, the 4 wheeled lunar rover, which would be used on Apollo missions in the 1970s.

M274 “Mechanical Mule” truck with a minigun during the Vietnam War (1960s)

The M274 was a small 4x4 open platform vehicle designed for a large variety of uses such as hauling cargo, weapons, and men. They were used by the US military from the mid 1950s until they were phased out in the 1980s.

Castro is wearing a yellow gold Day-Date and a GMT-Master on his left wrist. He reportedly liked to wear 2 watches as a redundancy if one stopped working, and for logistical reasons to coordinate timezones between Cuba and Moscow or another nation that he would be visiting.

Launched in 1971, the “Help Unsell the War” campaign was a famous public awareness effort created by the Committee to Help Unsell the War.

The campaign consisted of hundreds of artists, directors, and producers from many advertising agencies. They went on to produce a large swath of posters, commercials, and radio broadcasts to help bring awareness to ending the Vietnam War, which was deeply unpopular at the time.

General Dynamics Convair’s proposed mobile launcher for the U.S. Air Force’s MGM-134 Midgetman ICBM. (1980s)

In the later years of the Cold War, the US military was seeking to introduce more ground mobility into ICBM launchers, rather than having only fixed launch sites. The two main methods that were proposed were to use railway cars and truck transports.

General dynamics would be one of a few companies who delivered on proposals for a 10-wheel Hardened Mobile Launcher (HML) as a Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) concept during the 1980s U.S. Air Force competition for the MGM-134A Midgetman (Small ICBM).

Featuring sensors that could detect a nuclear flash, the vehicle would then retract its wheels and would mechanically anchor itself to the ground and use a vacuum system to suck the air out underneath, to resist the shockwave from the blast. After the blast, the vehicle would erect a missile to deploy as a retaliatory strike.

However, the Boeing company would end up receiving the go ahead to continue development of this concept with their own Hardened Mobile Launcher, where actual prototypes were built for testing. The entire program would end up being cancelled at the end of the Cold War.

US Military testing LeTourneau Transphibian Tree Crushers during the Vietnam War (1967-68)

Originally built in Texas and used for land clearing domestically, the US military exported 2 variants of the tree crushers to Vietnam during the war. The behemoths were used to flatten dense jungles, remove enemy cover, and clear pathways to bases.

However, their brief presence during the war came to a halt because of mechanical issues and becoming stuck in swampy regions. The massive 60+ ton machines were difficult to transport effectively across the inhospitable terrain of the jungle. The crushers cleared over 2,000 acres during testing before they were shipped back. Smaller bulldozers and chemical defoliants were used instead for clearing large swaths of jungle.

A couple attend a Halloween party dressed as Sputnik and a soviet officer on October 31, 1957 in Los Angeles, California.

Earlier that month on Oct 4, Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union and became the first artificial satellite orbiting the earth. From that point, the space race began. This event triggered a massive influx in federal spending towards spaceflight for both military and exploration missions. Education in the United States also shifted course to place a heavy emphasis on STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
