I am writing a new book to document real, original Paul T. Frankl rattan furniture from the 1930s and 1940s.

I am looking for anyone who may own, know of, or have information about authentic Paul T. Frankl rattan pieces, including old photos, family history, receipts, advertisements, catalogs, labels, or stories connected to the furniture.

If you have any original Frankl rattan furniture, or know someone who does, I would love to hear from you. My goal is to preserve and document this important part of American design history.

Please message me directly.

Thank you,

We're really excited about this recently acquired coffee table set. The base sculptures are in their original hand-painted condition, we just added brand new glass tops.

We've never seen the two end tables before! Have you?

Does anyone know of an upholsterer in the Los Angeles area who could make outdoor cushions with COM by 5/29-6/1? Ours is unavailable, and referrals would be helpful!

“We are living in a new world; our outlook on life has changed.”

— Paul Frankl

Frankl poses many questions early on in Space for Living. He contextualizes the radical changes taking place during his time and offers readers a path toward understanding them. He encourages the reader to accept the unstoppable progress of modern technology, materials, and aesthetics, arguing that a new world demands new ideas.

From there, Frankl lays out a philosophy that extends far beyond surface level decoration. He examines every aspect of interior design as it relates to a modern way of life.

Many of his ideas, and perhaps most importantly his mindset regarding progress, still feel relevant today as we continue navigating technological change and the challenges that accompany it.

Paul Frankl moved to Los Angeles in 1934, escaping the cold of New York City and settling into what would become his final home. By this point, Frankl was already a vehement and vocal proponent of modern design, having published his definitive book, New Dimensions, which contextualized the modern movement in the 1920s. Frankl would also frequently lecture and published two additional works before his move out West.

His style had already come to embody the progressive language of his time, but it wasn’t until his move to California that his vision fully took shape in the distinctly elegant and freeform manner for which he practiced later in his career. In Space for Living, Frankl laid out a blueprint for what he believed was the ideal way to build interior space, design furnishings, and live in the early twentieth century.

This week, we will explore some of these ideas, consider how they still resonate nearly a century later, and take a deeper look at several pieces in our collection that were featured in his 1938 publication.

This sculptural table is reminiscent of many things: airplanes, the designs of Noguchi, even amoebas. However you see it, it creates a different impression, or resemblance, and remains one of those pieces that has leaves an impact.

Jens Quistgaard’s designs are among the most important contributions to the Scandinavian Modern movement, and this original 1960s Danish Modern carved teak salt and pepper grinder set is a prime example. Quistgaard designed many variations of these grinders for Dansk Designs, each demonstrating how objects made from the same material and intended for the same purpose can still take on distinctly different forms. A good reminder that there can be many roads to the same destination.
