Today’s post isn’t about celebrating danger. I, like the whole of the mountaineering community, was saddened to hear the news unfold in the last 48 hours of Nims Purja and his team. I didn’t meet him, I don’t know him, but like many others I was inspired by him. I wanted to lean more into recognising a mindset, that inspired millions. ❤️
Nims Purja reminded so many of us that the limits we accept are often far smaller than the limits we’re capable of. He encouraged ordinary people to believe they could do extraordinary things, not because everyone should climb mountains, but because everyone has their own mountain to face. 🏔️
His loss and those of the members in his team is heartbreaking, and my thoughts are with their families, friends and the entire mountaineering community.
You don’t have to stand on an 8,000 metre peak to be inspired by what he represented. You don’t have to chase summits to adopt the same courage, resilience and refusal to let fear decide the course of your life.
Perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay isn’t to admire the life he lived from a distance. It’s to carry a small piece of that mindset into our own lives, to be a little braver, to question the limits we’ve accepted, and to have the audacity to believe we’re capable of more than we think.
Rest in peace to Nims Purja and everyone that was lost on the fateful summit attempt. Thank you for reminding so many people that the greatest mountains we climb are often the ones within ourselves. 🧠💔
