Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Happy Columbus Day to all those who celebrate.🕊️

We mean no harm by placing these two recognized holidays in the same image & caption. We’re sending our love to each & every one of you, Clothes Mentor Friends, on this day of honoring all of our unique ancestries & heritages.

As I write this caption, I’m sitting in front of my latest beading project & realizing that the various types of beads that I use have such interesting cultural origins. The technique of making disc-like beads dates as far back as 30,000 BCE in North Africa. The Pueblo peoples in North America crafted a similar technique of making heishi beads starting around 6000 BCE. The tiny glass seed beads that I love originated from Ancient Eqypt, Mesopotamia, & India around 2500-1000 BCE, while also having much later origins in Venice, Italy. The intricate seed beadwork that we see today in our country has evolved from the beautiful & sacred quillwork, made from porcupine quills, first done by Indigenous peoples who lived along the porcupine’s natural habitat up north from Maine to Alaska. More Fun Facts: This photo was taken at Mill Creek Park which was originally a passageway for Indigenous peoples traveling between the Ohio River & Lake Erie. Also, several Indigenous groups, who lived in this area for thousands of years, used the mineral-rich springs in Mill Creek Park & Mineral Ridge. “Mahoning” comes from words in the Lenape language meaning “salt lick”. Animals, like these white-tailed deer in the photo, would gather at the springs to lick salt from the ground.
