All hands on deck. Pirates and Vikings take the faire October 3 and 4.

For one weekend, sea raiders and shield bearers share the same ground, and it goes about as well as you'd expect. Come dressed as a pirate, a Viking, or something caught between the two. Cutlasses, axes, black flags, longships, whatever suits your crew.

Two to aim for: the Pirate and Viking Costume Contest on Saturday, and the Siren Song Contest on Sunday, where the best voice on the rocks takes it.

Gates at 10:30 both days. Tickets are good for any single day.

All About the Dogs Rescue joins us for Faerie Ring Revels, September 26 and 27, with adoptable dogs looking for their forever homes. This Connecticut rescue pulls dogs from tough spots, owner surrenders, strays, and hard medical cases, and gets them healthy, safe, and ready for a family. Maybe yours.

Come say hello, scratch some ears, and meet a few who are hoping to find their person. And even if you're not adopting, stopping by and sharing their dogs helps more than you'd think.

Faerie Ring Revels is this weekend, September 26 and 27.

For two days the faire fills up with fairies, sprites, mushroom folk, and forest spirits, and you can dress the part or just show up and watch. Saturday has the Fairy Costume Contest. Sunday has the Flora and Fauna Costume Contest, for anyone who'd rather come as a flower, a fox, a tree, or a mushroom.

It's also the Harp Twins' last weekend of the season, and a new jousting company, Equus Nobilis, rides for the first time.

So you want to be counted as a hobbit. Good news: it's easier than you think.

On Saturday, we're gathering every costumed hobbit at the Faire to attempt the largest gathering of hobbits anywhere outside the Shire. Here's all it takes to join in.

Dress the part from the ankles up. One rustic piece in earthy tones does most of the work: a waistcoat, a vest, a tunic, breeches, a simple dress, an apron, or a cloak. Then add the small stuff that makes it unmistakable: curly hair, a pipe, a walking stick, suspenders, or a well-stocked picnic basket.

Hobbits are famous for their bare, hairy feet, but Faire rules require shoes. Hobbit-foot slippers are the perfect answer. Barefoot spirit, yes. Actual bare feet, no.

Movie-perfect accuracy isn't the point. If someone glances your way and instantly thinks "that's a hobbit," you're ready to be counted.

Shirefolk Weekend, September 19 and 20. The gathering is Saturday. Bring the whole family in costume, and bring a camera, photos will be taken.
