Monday again. Somewhere out there a trail is doing just fine without you, and the closest you'll get to the summit today is the top of your inbox. The boots are by the door. The out-of-office is not on. We see you, staring at the window like it owes you a view. Hang in there - the weekend is a hike away.

Trail signs have three settings: optimistic, wrong, and openly hostile. "Almost there." "Easy loop." "0.5 miles to the top" (measured by a crow, apparently). And the map board that helpfully confirms you are, in fact, somewhere. Swipe through the greatest hits of trail signage that has personally lied to you. Then tag the hiking buddy who always says "it's just around the corner."

People always ask if my dog helps on the trail. He does not. Forty-two sticks found, zero trails navigated, one very committed stick collector. He is full-time chaos and part-time emotional support, and honestly that is the whole deal. But he is here, tongue out, leaning on my leg at every scenic overlook, and that is the point. Never hike alone. He is not helping, but he is here. For everyone whose trail buddy has four legs and no sense of direction.

Nobody tells you this at the trailhead. You sign up for fresh air and nice views, and somewhere around mile four you're clinging to a rock face doing math on how far you'd actually fall. Hiking is just walking where you might die, and honestly that's half the fun. The legs recover. The story doesn't get old. See you out there, probably slightly off the marked path.

A field guide to everything that has personally taken me down on the trail. Roots I saw coming. Rocks I didn't. Perfectly flat ground that somehow still got me. And, if we're being honest, mostly my own two feet.

None of it stops me going back out there. It just gives the group something to laugh about while I dust myself off.

Swipe through and tell me which one you're guilty of. There's a shirt for the rest of us over at wanderingsquirrel.shop.

Reminder: you don't have to outrun the bear. You just have to outrun the guy you came with.

He thought we were friends. We were. Right up until something moved in the trees.

Bigfoot waved. I did not wave back. I was busy.

Tag the hiking buddy you'd absolutely leave behind. They know who they are.

Nobody has ever said "we're almost there" and been telling the truth. It's still three switchbacks, one false summit, and a suspiciously optimistic trail sign away. Somehow we keep believing it anyway. Tag the hiking buddy who says it every single time.

“Explore More” sounds inspiring until you realize it means more hills, more sweat, and more wondering why you thought this was a good idea 🐻
But here’s the thing — we keep going back. Every. Single. Weekend.
Because the trail mix hits different at elevation, the complaining is better with views, and parking lot naps after a hike are undefeated.

“It’s another half mile or so” is hiking’s version of “we need to talk” — you KNOW it’s a lie, but you’re about to find out exactly how bad it really is 🏔️😤
Every hiking group has that one friend. The designated “almost there” liar. The elevation-underestimator. The switchback-minimizer.
This shirt is their autobiography.
