There’s a reason they’re called aviators.

Long before the silhouette became an icon, American Optical was engineering eyewear to solve a very real problem: protecting pilots’ eyes in the air.

From early flight goggles and the D-1 designed for U.S. military pilots in 1935, to the AN-6531 of WWII and the FG-58 engineered to work with flight helmets and oxygen masks, every evolution was driven by what pilots needed to see clearly and perform at their best.

Then the FG-58 went even higher. NASA selected it for astronaut survival kits, and in 1969 it traveled to the moon with Apollo 11. Today, you know its direct descendant as the Original Pilot.
