Maria's Mantillas

Maria's Mantillas Welcome to my mantilla shop! Here you'll find quality handmade mantillas / veils / chapel caps. I began wearing a mantilla in church when I was in college.

It was basically a dare by some friends of mine, but, when I tried it, it really felt like a good thing for me spiritually so I continued wearing a headcovering each time I went to church. It wasn't always easy, and sometimes even felt awkward when there were very few other women covering their heads, but as the years went by it got easier. I learned more about the once common tradition that is no

w much less popular. Before the 1960s women always covered their heads in church, just like men uncovered them (which the men still do). In the past few years I have seen more and more women desiring to bring back the tradition to cover their heads, whether it is with a mantilla, a scarf, or a hat. There are many different options, but I decided to focus on making mantillas for those women who gravitate towards the style popularized by Jackie Kennedy. When I started sewing mantillas I wanted to make a product that was beautiful and worthy of the special occasion of wearing it to church. I found fine laces and lace trims and got to work designing and creating my mantillas! Each mantilla is carefully sewn with precision to be of the highest quality possible! Every one I sew I would feel proud to wear myself, and many of them I am so tempted to keep and not sell at all! I hope that every one of you who purchases a mantilla will see as much beauty in it and in the tradition of veiling in church as I do, and I hope they are an inspiration to many!

Good Friday seems like a distant event, so awful you could never imagine the horror.
But there's one aspect I, and many other mothers, have glimpsed-- Mary's suffering watching her son die and the heart wrenching emptiness that she endured.
In this waiting period between death and resurrection, may Mary give comfort to all grieving mothers, and may Jesus give them the grace needed to persevere in their vocations.

Merry Christmas Eve!

We've been working on a few craft projects lately, including a from 's pattern (the forbidden fruit square is pictured here), and a tempera painting, laid out by mommy and finished by .

I'm thinking we'll do another layer on that painting, and we're going to be making gingerbread later on, too! Lastly, I'm hoping to finish a stocking for her if I have time! If not, well, Christmas is still 12 days long πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ˜Š

It's already December (how is it already December??!!!), but let me just add a little story about November.

In November, Catholics remember the Holy Souls. We have All Saints Day and All Souls Day, and we pray for our loved ones who have died.

Not all that long ago, a priest would wear black for funerals, aka "Requiem Masses". Except one kind of funeral-- that of a baptized child who had not yet reached the age of reason. For those Masses, he would wear white. And those Masses were the "Mass of the Angels".

This is because we know for sure that their souls are with God and the angels and all the other saints.

A baby's funeral is the most heartbreaking thing, and it's so hard for their family and friends on earth. But we know they are experiencing the unimaginable beauty of the Beatific Vision, and in that knowledge we find some comfort, while still acknowledging the deep pain and grief that will always surround that memory for us.

My little princess is one year old! She can say "hi", "dog", "ball", "thank you", and "bye bye". Her favorite food is avocado. This cute little chatterbox loves playing the piano and drums, rolling away from mommy or towards trouble, spending time outside, and petting "dog", who finally is mostly comfortable with Josie 🀩

I'm still not ready to reopen shop quite yet, but I've still managed to get some sewing in!

Thanks to for the crab square pattern! It was such a fun way to get started with paper piecing and making my very first quilt (although only the top is done so far 😬 )!

The second piece is a pattern I found on Pinterest from . Thanks for that! I don't know what I'll do with that one yet, but it was fun to make, and a bit easier than the crabs πŸ™‚.
