💚 A LITTLE GLASS WITH A LOT OF HISTORY 💚

Have you ever wondered why some vintage glass glows bright green under a blacklight?

That magical glow comes from uranium glass — and its history is pretty fascinating.

Glassmakers began experimenting with uranium compounds as a coloring agent in the 1830s, using it to create beautiful yellow, green and yellow-green shades. It became especially popular during the Victorian era and reached its peak of popularity from roughly the 1880s through the 1920s.

You may have heard it called “Vaseline glass,” a nickname that came from the resemblance of some of the yellow-green glass to petroleum jelly. But uranium glass wasn’t just used for decorative pieces — it was made into everyday items like dishes, drinking glasses, vases, perfume bottles, lamps and other household objects.

And here’s the really fun part…

✨ Under ultraviolet (black) light, many uranium glass pieces fluoresce that unmistakable bright green! The glow comes from the way the uranium compounds interact with UV light — not because the glass is somehow “glowing with radiation.”

Then history took a turn. During World War II, uranium became strategically important, and government restrictions largely brought uranium-glass production to a halt in the 1940s.

Today, these pieces are highly collectible — not only because of their beautiful colors and unmistakable glow, but because you’re holding a little piece of glassmaking, science and history all at once.

✨ WE’RE HIRING! ✨

Stories is looking for a part-time Sales Associate to join our little shop!

This would be a great after-school job for a junior or senior — students are welcome to apply! We’re looking for someone who can help out a couple afternoons a week after school until 5 PM, plus a few weekends each month.

It’s not a lot of hours, but it’s a fun opportunity to work in a unique local shop, meet people, and be part of the Stories team. 💛
