After 7 years of lawyering, I am officially a student again!!! 👩‍🏫

This first week of school has been a whirlwind of classes, reading, and inspirational teachers and speakers. Already, my classes are proving to be both fascinating and challenging! 📚

I am grateful to my family and friends, and especially to my husband, who have been so supportive of and excited for me! Thank you all for being here for me and reminding me to be patient and give myself some grace as I navigate this next chapter. ❤️

I am also grateful for the opportunity to spend time learning from amazing Korbel professors and listening to inspirational speakers, like Leymah Gbowee, who continue to motivate my fellow students and me to make a positive difference in the world. 🌍

Happy National Learn About Butterflies Day! 🦋 (Yes, it is a real holiday!)

Did you know 80% of butterflies have declined in abundance or distribution since 1976? We may be the last generation to enjoy butterflies and moths in abundance.

As many of you know, I have a slight obsession with beautiful things, with shoes, and therefore, with beautiful shoes! I also feel very strongly about giving back to the community and about protecting the most beautiful jewel, Mother Earth. 🌎 Naturally (no pun intended), I was ecstatic to learn that partnered with to create these incredible sandals, inspired by the butterfly, and donated a portion of the proceeds of each sale to .

I wore these gorgeous works of art to my wedding rehearsal and subsequent dinner at and absolutely adore them!

Here are some ways you can help save the butterflies:
- Plant a butterfly garden full of nectar-producing wildflowers.
- Watch Wings of Life directed by & narrated by on
- Make sure water is available. (Pro Tip: Butterflies will drink from the damp soil and leaves when you water your plants, too.)
- In the spring, don’t clean up dead leaves and brush too early. Wait until the temperature is consistently above 50°F to allow time for the species that overwinter in a chrysalis to emerge safely and without the threat of frost
- Use to post on social media

Feminism: [fe-mə-ˌni-zəm]: the belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. (Encyclopedia Britannica)

Feminism does not mean hating anyone who is not female, nor does it mean that all sexes are treated the SAME; it means that all people, regardless of gender or sexual identity are treated with EQUITY.

I recently attended a panel discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion. I know CLEs (Continuing Legal Education) and other programming attempts at discussing these topics have received mixed reviews. In some cases, I agree, people are just trying to "check the box" and get credit for attending a diversity-focused event, but this panel confirmed for me that does not always have to be the case.

First, the moderator and panelists focused on what the difference is between diversity, equity, and inclusion; we have some idea of what it means to foster diversity, but what is the real difference between inclusion and equity? These were some of their responses:

"[Diversity is] being invited to the dance, [inclusion is] being asked to dance, and [equity is] people WANTING to dance with you, not just feeling like they HAVE to."

"My daughter plays with everyone & thinks nothing of it (diversity), everyone plays with my daughter & thinks nothing of it (inclusion), all of the parents, teachers and kids watch all of them playing together & think nothing of it (equity)."

The Panelists also shared some advice about how we promote equity in our workplace:

1. The goal should be to make all people feel welcome.

2. Mentorship is critical, especially in sectors like the law, where women and minorities often face unique challenges that their superiors may not understand.

3. Be yourself! You're cool- that's why we [they] hired you!

I am a feminist because I want women and girls to succeed, including myself, my friends, my friends’ daughters, my mentees, my coworkers, and so many other women in my life. I believe that many, if not most, of the people in my life feel the same way.
