Did you know Vermont's iconic green-and-gold roadside historical markers have been sharing the stories of the state's people, places, and events for decades? You'll find hundreds of them across Vermont, each preserving a unique piece of local history.

We're proud to have one right outside The Vermont Country Store in Weston. Our marker tells the story of our beginnings, from Vrest and Mildred Orton founding the business in 1946 to making this historic 1828 building our home. As we celebrate 80 years of The Vermont Country Store, we're grateful to continue welcoming visitors and sharing our story with each new generation.

If you're out on Vermont's back roads this summer, keep an eye out for red clover.

Named Vermont's state flower in the late 1800s, red clover earned the honor because it was already such a familiar part of the state's fields and farmland. More than a century later, you'll still find it growing in hayfields, along country roads, and in open meadows across Vermont.

For Lyman Orton, growing up in Vermont meant growing up with The Vermont Country Store.

Founded in 1946 by his parents, Vrest and Mildred Orton, the store was woven into Lyman's life from the very beginning. As a boy in Weston, he helped with the family business, stamping endorsements on catalog checks and learning firsthand what it meant to serve customers with care and integrity.

Here, Lyman is pictured outside our Weston store in 2000. By then he had spent decades helping shape the company while staying true to the values that inspired it from the start.

As we celebrate 80 years of The Vermont Country Store, we're grateful for Lyman's role in carrying forward a tradition of offering useful and distinctive products and personal service to create cherished memories for generations of customers.
