Today I remember Joey, beloved husband of Beth, on the anniversary of the memorial service I had the privilege of officiating at All Saints Cemetery.

Family and friends gathered to honor Joey's life and the love he shared with those around him. His cousin, also named Joe, offered heartfelt memories that painted a beautiful picture of the man Joey was and the impact he had on so many lives. Beth asked me to read the poems A Legacy of Love and I'm Free, whose words brought comfort, reflection, and hope to all who were present.

At the conclusion of the service, we released balloons into the sky, sending our prayers, messages of love, and cherished memories to Joey. It was a symbolic moment of releasing some of our grief while continuing the journey of healing and remembrance.

Though years have passed, Joey's legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. May his memory continue to bring comfort during difficult times, smiles when treasured moments are recalled, and inspiration to live in ways that honor the love, kindness, and spirit he shared with the world.

Remembering John on the anniversary of the memorial service I had the honor of officiating at his home in Chicago. I first met John and many of his friends when I officiated at the funeral of another dear friend in their circle.

During the service, Jean beautifully recited The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, and we invited everyone present to share their memories of John. Those heartfelt reflections created a deeply moving tribute to a life so well loved. The service concluded with The Lord’s Prayer.

John, may the memories of your life continue to live in the hearts of all who knew and loved you — bringing comfort in moments of sadness, smiles in moments of remembrance, and inspiration to live with greater kindness and compassion. Rest in peace.

Happy anniversary to Chelsea and Ryan, whose elegant wedding I officiated at Stan Mansion in Chicago. Having been together since their teenage years, their heartfelt personal vows beautifully reflected the depth of their love and connection.

To begin the ceremony and affirm the unity of everyone present, we shared in the Sign of Peace. I also read an excerpt from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, which perfectly captured their feelings for one another. Before exchanging vows, they participated in a handfasting ritual — the tradition from which the phrase “tying the knot” originates. Following the ring exchange, the ceremony concluded with Carl Sandburg’s poem “I Love You.”

Chelsea and Ryan, wishing you many more years filled with love, laughter, joyous adventures, wonderful experiences, and good health together!

Happy anniversary to Xochitl and Javier, whose intimate outdoor wedding I officiated in the backyard of their Wheeling home. Their heartfelt ceremony included a reading from Corinthians, a quiet moment to look out at their gathered family and friends, and a beautiful Passing of the Peace ritual shared by all.

After exchanging vows, I read the Blessing of the Hands, followed by special promises they made to their daughter Natalia, who proudly served as ring bearer. Before the ring exchange, family members warmed and blessed the rings, symbolizing the love and support of everyone present.

Wishing Xochitl and Javier many more years of love, laughter, joyous adventures, wonderful experiences, and good health together!

Belated happy anniversary to Tracy and Fred, whose joyful interfaith tennis-themed wedding I had the honor of officiating at the historic Gates of Heaven synagogue in Madison, Wisconsin — a charming former synagogue nestled in a beautiful park setting.

Their ceremony was the perfect blend of heartfelt emotion, laughter, tradition, and personality. Held under a chuppah lovingly carried by their four children, the ceremony included sharing a glass of wine and the traditional breaking of the glass, honoring Fred’s Jewish heritage while symbolizing the strength and joy of their new life together.

From beginning to end, the day was filled with love, family, and wonderful tennis touches that reflected their shared passion and partnership.

Tracy and Fred, wishing you many more years filled with love, laughter, joyous adventures, amazing experiences, and most of all, good health together. Mazel tov and happy anniversary!

Belated happy anniversary to April and Sam whose beautiful outdoor interfaith wedding I had the honor of officiating at Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake.

Their ceremony reflected both of their backgrounds and values in meaningful and memorable ways. Sam’s aunt and uncle read a passage from Winnie the Pooh, and before the vows, April’s cousin shared Mark Twain’s humorous and insightful thoughts on marriage.

Following the ring exchange, April and Sam participated in several symbolic rituals: exchanging coins to honor April’s Filipino heritage, a wine sharing ritual symbolizing joy, and a sand unity ceremony representing the blending of their lives. To honor Sam’s Jewish background, they each broke a glass as a reminder that both life’s challenges and celebrations are best faced together as a team.

I closed the ceremony with Vachel Lindsay’s poem “The Spice-Tree,” followed by the release of two white doves. Since doves mate for life and return home together, they beautifully symbolized lifelong love, devotion, and partnership.

April and Sam, happy anniversary! Wishing you many more years filled with love, joyful adventures, wonderful experiences, and good health together.

Belatedly remembering Joyce on the anniversary of the memorial service celebrating her life that I had the honor of officiating.

Joyce was an independent, honest, hard-working woman with high moral standards and great courage. Born in Japan, she was attending college in Nagasaki when the atomic bomb was dropped. By fate, she had left Nagasaki that day to return to her hometown of Fukuoka, a decision that saved her life.

The service, held at Shaw’s Crab House in Schaumburg, included the beautiful biodegradable urn containing her cremains. Later, her family scattered her ashes over Lake Michigan, where the urn gently disintegrated and returned to nature.

May Joyce’s memory always remain in the hearts of her family and friends — offering comfort, bringing smiles to their faces, and inspiring them to live their lives in ways that honor her memory.

Thursday, May 21 marked the 5th anniversary of moving into my “new-to-me” condo. Somehow it feels both like yesterday and a lifetime ago. I could never have done it without my incredible Moving Advisory Committee — talented professionals along with wonderful friends who packed, unpacked, organized, solved problems, and patiently repositioned furniture more times than I can count!

Since then, life has continued to bring new adventures. I fulfilled a major bucket-list dream by traveling to Israel for my 80th birthday, followed by a huge celebration surrounded by people I love.

As I begin my 81st year, I’m grateful for the friendships, support, and opportunities that continue to shape my life. I’m also continuing my work — or rather, my joy — as a LifeCycle Celebrant, creating and officiating custom ceremonies for life’s meaningful milestones, including weddings, funerals, vow renewals, and pet memorials.

As Bert used to say, “With a flip of the page, I can marry someone; with a flip of the page, I can bury someone.” I'd love to create a meaningful memorable ceremony for you! www.RoseLifeCycleCeremonies.com

Here’s to new adventures, meaningful connections, cherished memories, and all the possibilities still ahead.

Happy anniversary to Sarah and Blair whose intimate outdoor wedding I officiated in Welles Park in Chicago. They are soulmates and best friends, so I read the poem “Best Friends” during their ceremony. Before the vow and ring exchange, the rings were passed among all the guests to be warmed and blessed.

There was so much joy and laughter throughout the ceremony as they celebrated finally being able to live in the same city together.

Blair and Sarah, best wishes for many more love-filled years together full of joyous adventures, amazing experiences, and most of all, good health!

Happy anniversary to Michelle and Tony whose intimate outdoor wedding I had the honor of officiating at Redfield Estate in Glenview. After being together for 17 years, it felt especially fitting that Michelle walked down the aisle to the song “At Last.”

Before exchanging vows, they participated in a meaningful handfasting ritual, with the ribbons lovingly wrapped around their hands by their daughter, Cerys, making the ceremony even more personal and heartfelt. Following the ceremony, they joyfully recessed to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”

Michelle and Tony, best wishes for many more love-filled years together filled with joyous adventures, amazing experiences, and most of all, good health!
