For this installment of our outfit series, we feature a grey and pink windowpane Nikky sport coat with peak lapels.

These lapels can trace their lineages to 17th and 18th century military uniforms and formal court dress. An upward pointing edge allowed soldiers to button up their coats against their necks for warmth. As it transitioned into civilian fashion, the sharp upward angled peak became an indicator of high formality, prestige, and tailoring craftsmanship.

These madras pants started in Chennai.

Artisans on India’s Coromandel Coast hand-wove lightweight cotton with vegetable dyes for the reds, yellows, and greens, for centuries before it reached American campuses in the 1950s. When Brooks Brothers began importing it, they put a warning on the label: “Guaranteed to Bleed.”

That was the point. The dyes run when washed, softening the colors into something personal. Madras is not supposed to stay perfect. It is supposed to live in.
