Keeping beaches clean, dark, and flat is crucial for protecting sea turtle hatchlings and nesting females all around the world. Be sure to remove trash and beach items like chairs, umbrellas, and toys. Litter can block nesting paths, entangle turtles, or attract predators that destroy nests. Turn off or shield artificial lights near the beach. Hatchlings use natural light cues to find the ocean. Artificial lighting disorients them, causing them to crawl inland, where they often die from exhaustion, dehydration, or predation. Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before leaving the beach. Hatchlings can become trapped in holes, and nesting females may abandon nesting attempts if obstructed.
