Phillis Wheatley was transported from West Africa to Boston at about age seven and sold to the Wheatley family as a slave. She was taught to read and write. Seeing her talent for poetry, they encourged her. The Wheatley's son, Nathaniel, took her to London at age 20, seeking to have her poems published. That publication made her the first African-American published poet and made her famous in England and the colonies. Her poems praised liberty and the revolutionary cause. Even George Washington praised her work and invited her to met him at Cambridge in 1776. Shortly after its publication she was emancipated by the Wheatleys.

Anna Smith Strong was posted here as an American Revolution patriot and much more. Anna was an important cog in the Culper Spy Ring, helping to get messages from the Ring to Gen. Washington. Reportedly she sent signals directing members of the spy ring by hanging certain clothes on her clothesline on Long Island's North shore. Incredibly dangerous, considering the consequences if caught. Most certainly a Lady to be Remembered.

On March 31, 1776, Abigail Adams wrote her husband, John Adams, a Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia:

"I long to hear that you have declared an independency -- and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors."
