Visual Index VISUAL INDEX is an independent art gallery celebrating makers from all 50 states.

Founded in 2017 Visual Index is a woman owned independent art gallery located in the downtown arts district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. We carry art from all 50 states while maintaining an emphasis on North Carolina art. We feature contemporary craft and fine art with mediums spanning clay, jewelry, fiber, wood, glass, 2D works, and more.

It feels like many moons ago that Kara Hammond and I made these incredible Freak Flags. This particular flag was mine—I kept it for myself and proudly displayed it at Visual Index for a couple of years.

Over the course of several months, my employees kept leaving me notes that someone was VERY interested in buying it. After much internal deliberation (and a little reluctance to let it go), I decided that their persistence made them the perfect owner for something this cool.

I’m glad it’s in a good home, and I love thinking about all the cool people who walk through the doors of Visual Index.

Okay, I’ll step off my soapbox now.

That’s a whole lot of beautiful work to browse, and while we believe our website is pretty easy to navigate, we also know that sometimes you only want a handful of options to choose from.

At Visual Index we truly love a smirk and a low chuckle. Heck, we love a loud cackle, too. Side-eyes, eyebrows, silly smiles. We're here to delight.

Here’s the thing about handmade: it takes time. ⌛ That piece of pottery might have taken someone three weeks to throw, glaze, and fire. That necklace was sawn, hammered, shaped, and finished by hand. That woodblock print? There are only so many of them, and once they’re sold, that’s it.

The makers we represent at Visual Index aren’t sitting in a warehouse with a thousand boxes waiting to ship. It's one person (sometimes two) in a studio, making things by hand, in small batches. And, like I said, it takes time.

So... when we say "start thinking about gifts now," we don’t mean panic-buy. We mean give yourself first pick: time to wander, find something weird and wonderful, and actually think about who the gift is for.

Come see what’s new. No pressure. No countdown clock. Just really beautiful work made by really excellent people.
