Attention Artisans, Artists and Craftspersons

John James Audubon was among the greatest wildlife artists of the nineteenth century—a man who devoted his life to capturing the wild world with such honesty that his birds still seem ready to lift from the page.

His life's work became the monumental Birds of America, the legendary Elephant Folios whose life-sized illustrations remain one of the finest achievements in natural history publishing. To accomplish what many believed impossible, Audubon crossed the Atlantic in search of master engravers whose skill could faithfully translate his original paintings into works worthy of posterity. With the faith of patrons and the support of a handful of visionaries, the impossible became history.

That story has never really ended.

Every generation leaves behind a few objects that refuse to be ordinary. They become companions to families, witnesses to history, and treasures handed from one careful pair of hands to the next. This folio was created in that same spirit.

Before you is the beginning of a new folio, one that quietly nods to the grandeur of Audubon's Elephant Folios while standing confidently on its own.

Its pages begin as an uncommon paper stock—a small reserve of exceptionally heavy, archival-quality sheets in a warm wheat tone. Each parent sheet is folded into signatures of ten, yielding sixty generous pages measuring seventeen by twenty-three inches. They possess the reassuring weight and character that invite graphite, ink, watercolor, charcoal, or the measured hand of a master calligrapher.

The binding was never intended to be merely adequate.

Each cover is fashioned from genuine American buffalo hide, contract tanned exclusively to our own exacting specifications. The leather is a substantial four ounces, its edges carefully turned, rolled, and stitched with heavy #69 nylon thread. Inside rests a five-ounce brushed suede lining, creating a remarkable nine-ounce cover that feels as enduring as an old saddle and as welcoming as a favorite library chair. Every volume is hand-bound and sewn with heavy waxed cotton thread using methods that favor longevity over speed.

Lift it into your hands and you immediately understand its purpose. It has the quiet confidence of something built not for seasons, but for generations. It protects what is placed inside because it was made with the expectation that what it holds will one day matter deeply to someone not yet born.

Today, this Elephant/Bison Folio is one of a kind.

It was created for the serious artist, the accomplished calligrapher, the naturalist, or the collector who understands that the finest tools are not consumed—they are inherited.

Long after its first owner has laid down the pen or brush, this folio should still open with dignity, its pages preserving the work, the thoughts, and the imagination of another time. Some possessions are bought. A very few are entrusted to us for a while before we pass them on.

This is one of those.

Bison vs. Buffalo

If you're asking the taxonomists, the answer is simple: it's a bison. They'll tell you so with the certainty of a man measuring fence posts.

But language has always had a mind of its own. Ever since Buffalo Bill carried the great shaggy beast across America—and around the world—in his Wild West Show, folks have called it "buffalo." The name stuck, not because it was scientifically perfect, but because it fit the story.

We happily embrace that tradition. Buffalo Bill's show introduced millions to the spirit of the American West and helped make this remarkable animal a symbol recognized far beyond the prairie. History has a way of giving names their own authority, and this is one of them.

So while the animal is, by every scientific measure, a bison, "buffalo" remains an honored part of our heritage—and we're proud to keep that tradition alive.

Sincerely,

Bill
