Thanks to Christy Burke for sharing her family's Youngstown Story!
My memories of the mill are few indeed!! I was born in youngstown at St.E’s. In 1960. We soon moved to PA, but visited my grandparents, who lived st 88 Hazeltine Ave.... all of their married life.. Some of my favorite childhood memories were spent here... 88 Hazeltine was at the top of the hill.. at night... the sky looked orange, and the tall stacks were visible.
My grandfather, Harry Voina, and both of my aunts husbands worked at the mill! I believe Youngstown Sheet and Tube...my grandfather knew the neighbors.... many also worked there.. I remember them having nicknames for each other, and hollering hellos or jokes to one another from their front porches..
On visits we visited Hills, Idora Park, and Mill Creek Park. I was intrigued by the”bat” house?”
I remember my grandpa’s black metal lunchbox.... the sounds and sirens, smells, the bar at the corner of the street on one side, church in the other... life lived on this street.... then beautiful with landscaped yards... pride, faith, love of family... and the sights and sounds of the mill always.......
Thank you!
Christy Burke
I remember Black Monday... and my aunt worrying about my Uncle Bob..what he would do, what everyone would do....
