Everyone has their own reason for starting a sewing course. Some want to learn a new skill, some want to make their own clothes, and some simply want to try something new.

But I think we all share the same feeling when we finally see something we imagined come to life — something we made with our own hands.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. That little feeling of “I made this!” is what makes it special.

A little thought about pattern drafting.

There are so many different formulas and methods for drafting patterns, and I’ve noticed that people can sometimes be very quick to say, “This is wrong.”

But honestly, I think pattern drafting is a bit like cooking.

There are general recipes and basic principles, but everyone develops their own way of doing things. Different ingredients, different techniques, different tastes — and the food can still turn out perfectly good.

Pattern drafting is much the same. Different drafting systems can use different formulas and approaches, yet still lead to a good-fitting pattern.

I’m not saying that every method is automatically correct. Understanding the principles and the reasoning behind them is important. But if someone uses a different method from the one you learned, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re doing it wrong.

Sometimes, they simply have a different logic behind it.

There is more than one way to draft a pattern, sew a garment, or solve a fitting problem. I think we can share what we know without immediately dismissing someone else’s way of doing things.

Một chút suy nghĩ về việc ra rập.

Có rất nhiều công thức và phương pháp khác nhau để ra rập, và đôi khi mình thấy mọi người khá nhanh chóng nói rằng: “Cách này sai.”

Nhưng thật ra, mình nghĩ ra rập cũng giống như nấu ăn.

Có những công thức và nguyên tắc cơ bản, nhưng mỗi người lại có một cách làm riêng. Nguyên liệu khác nhau, kỹ thuật khác nhau, khẩu vị khác nhau — và món ăn vẫn có thể ngon.

Ra rập cũng vậy. Những hệ thống ra rập khác nhau có thể sử dụng những công thức và cách tính khác nhau, nhưng vẫn có thể cho ra một chiếc rập vừa vặn.

Mình không nghĩ phương pháp nào cũng mặc nhiên đúng. Việc hiểu nguyên lý và lý do phía sau mỗi bước vẫn rất quan trọng. Nhưng nếu một người sử dụng phương pháp khác với phương pháp bạn đã học, điều đó không nhất thiết có nghĩa là họ làm sai.

Có thể đơn giản là họ có một cách tư duy và một logic khác.

Trong may mặc, có rất nhiều cách để ra rập, may một sản phẩm hay xử lý một vấn đề về phom dáng. Mình nghĩ chúng ta hoàn toàn có thể chia sẻ kiến thức của mình mà không cần ngay lập tức phủ nhận cách làm của người khác.

There's something special about watching a flat piece of fabric slowly become something you can actually wear. Every student works at their own pace, asks lots of questions, makes a few mistakes, and leaves with new skills and a handmade piece to be proud of.

It can be hard to grasp the fundamentals of pattern drafting at first, but it will make much more sense as you practice and sew your own garments. Be patient with yourself—the more you sew, the more everything starts to click.
