We need to weigh up NEED vs. WANT to slow down consumption. Not consume because we want to wear the latest fad.

“There’s this pernicious idea that fast fashion exists only because of poor people. We know that middle-class people are propping this s**t up,” said Aja Barber, a sustainable fashion consultant and author of “Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism.”

The last major downturn in 2008 was a huge setback for an emerging movement. But this time, shifts in both consumer and business culture mean things are likely to be different.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech...

The fashion industry has been identified as a key area of focus, with textile consumption the bloc’s fourth-highest impact sector in terms of environment and climate change, third for water and land use and fifth in terms of virgin material consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, according to the European Commission."

The 27-member bloc outlined an ambitious policy strategy Wednesday that aims to curb the industry’s environmental impact and address labour abuses.

"A report from environmental campaigning organisation Changing Markets Foundation published Thursday dubbed the largely voluntary and self-reported initiatives brands commonly use to back up their sustainability efforts as a “licence to greenwash,” pointing to a lack of independence, transparency, ambition and accountability at high-profile schemes including the Higg Index, Cradle to Cradle and The Microfibre Consortium."

The certifications and standards widely used to lend credibility to big brands’ sustainability claims are coming under fire, as environmental campaigners seek to influence new policy initiatives.

Once folks do that, they do start to grasp that much of the pricing we see is exploitative." Someone is losing out - and it's not the brand but the weakest link.
Think before you buy!

The price on the tag has to factor in the materials, labor, transportation, taxes and of course a retail markup, among other costs. When all these are added up, it becomes clear that someone is losing out in this equation.
