THE MAKING OF PITH HELMETS

Pith helmets are also known as “mũ dút”, “mũ bấc” and “mũ Pháp” by many Vietnamese people. Dút or bấc is the name of fast growing trees with lightweight wood grown in the northern part of Vietnam.

The artisans living in Hàng Bông street over a century ago used the trunks of these trees to make pith hats.

The making of pith helmets requires a long process.

The first step in the process is creating a mold, using the mixture of sand, cement and water. Each style of pith hats needs its own mold.
For instance, if a craftsman wants to make British pith helmets, he will use a mold accordingly.

Next, long thin strips of wood cut from Dút tree trunks are stuck around the mold to form the first layer.
Then another layer is placed onto the finished one. The work continues until the product gets its standard thickness.

Normally, each hat has 4 layers of pith wood. Excess wood is removed with a sharp knife and the edge of the brim is sanded to give the product a good shape.

After that, the helmet is covered with cloth and other parts like air vents, sweatbands, chinstraps, bands (puggaree)… are assembled.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING A PITH HELMET

1. Dut trees grown in the northern part of Vietnam are known for their lightweight wood – an ideal material for making pith helmets.
2. Long thin wooden strips were cut from dut tree trunks.
3. A mold was created by using a mixture of sand, cement and water.
4. Thin strips of pith wood are being placed on the mold to form the first layer.
5. When the helmet gets its standard thickness ( normally 4 layers of wood ), an artisan will remove excess wood with a sharp knife to give it a smooth shape.
6. The helmet is being covered with cloth.
7. A band or a puggaree is being wrapped. This step requires artisans to use their left hands even though they are not left handed.
8. A metal lid covered with cloth is applied on the top of the hat to prevent rain water pe*******on from the top air vent.
