Bosler-ism: Design is in the details. ✨
Paying attention to details shows that you care about your work. Finessing the details means
you take the time to polish every design 100 percent. 98.5 percent is not good enough. 🙌
You’re under a deadline, the client is emailing every five minutes, and you have to get the job out the door right now! It’s awfully easy to tell yourself the job is acceptable and to send it out. The client will never notice, right? Wrong. As a professional, we need to step up, making certain that every last little detail has been attended to. Attention to detail is the difference between a good designer and a spectacular one. ✨
Not convinced? If your car is being repaired, do you want the mechanic to fix the issue perfectly or is “good enough” good enough? What about a hair stylist who doesn’t bother to check the cut’s evenness all the way around your head? Is it OK if the left side is slightly longer than the right—not dramatically, but just enough so you notice? Of course not. Complacency shouldn’t be good enough for your client either. Show your clients you care about their business just as much as they do by attending to every detail.🙌

I missed so I’m declaring it instead! 🤗 This board was created to capture a sophisticated vintage vibe. One of things I love about moodboards is that it gives me the excuse to go searching for inspirational images that capture the emotion I’m after. And then there’s color. So many choices! Picking the right one is just as enjoyable. Call me a nerd, but I will happily spend hours deciding between the subtle differences in color and choosing just the right complements. 🤓
What are you a nerd about❓

Logos are rarely used on their own. They end up on everything. Stationery is the first thing usually addressed after client approval of the logo. Stationery has many components; that’s why it’s called a set. ✨
What do professionals do when they first meet each other? Exchange business cards, of course. How does a company get paid for services rendered? By sending invoices. How do their customers know they need to open an envelope they received in the mail? By looking at the return address. Stationery is a gateway of communication between company and customer.✨
The rise of digital communication has taken some of the need away for stationery but I still love good old fashioned snail mail. I get excited for the tangible feel of paper in my hands especially when it’s a message from a friend or client. Of course I mean paper things other than bills, that is. How about you? 📬

Clean and beautiful typography creates an air of sophisticated friendliness for Walnut Street paper, a vintage ephemera and rare and antique book dealer. Logos don’t have to be complicated especially if it will overwhelm the product or service of the business. Sometimes simple is best.🙌
Simplicity is also important in life. While I have a ton of crazy things going on all the time, I still try to keep things simple in the way I approach them. Natural, functional, and undistracted with my mind as free from clutter as possible. Easier said than done at times… ok, most of the time, but I still try.✨
My biggest challenge to simplicity is the distraction of my phone. What’s yours?📱

Sometimes a client’s needs are outside the scope of what we consider “safe” design. Sometimes the client doesn’t know it yet. A design that’s a little different and a little edgier may be the right direction for the brand and target audience. These are designs that propel your design outside their comfort zone and make them stand out in a sea of brand sameness. 🌊
Taking a riskier approach to design is not for the meek DESIGNER or timid CLIENT. It takes guts to go against the industry norm. Fear breeds an attitude of, “Everybody else is doing it so I should probably do it too.” But ask yourself: Is there a valid reason why everyone is doing it, or is everyone doing it just because everyone else is doing it?🙌
It’s okay to explore different types image-making, materials, experimental typography and nontraditional grids. It’s okay to experiment with potential “riskier” design, BUT always remembering to keep communication goals in mind. Risky or safe, the brand must speak to its intended audience. ✨
The Tasting Room’s steampunk industrial style demanded something a little different. Playful typography helps an 19th century gentleman say, “how do you do” to beer enthusiasts. Wait til you meet his other friends…✨
What do you do to stand out in the crowd❓

Moodboards are so fun to develop. This moodboard is part of a series I developed for a new European eatery in development. I presented several and asked the clients to tell me which images resonated with them and why. This method of working helps the client visualize the mood and essence of the brand, and helps me understand what the client likes/dislikes. All of it helps sets the tone as I move on to the logo and other brand development. ✨
What do you like best about your brand? Dislike?❤️💜

Boslerism: Typography is everything.
Humans communicate through the written word. Typography is how we express ourselves, sell products, distinguish food from poison, separate one brand from another, understand instructions, stick to the speed limit, bake a soufflé, help our kids fall into fairy tale-induced dreams… You get the idea. The easier it is to read and understand, the better. We rely on typography, so it is important to use it properly.
Confession: Typography is MY everything. I’m a total type dork, type geek AND type nerd. My favorite letter is Q and I could wax on for hours about the subtleties of type, and why you should never ever ever use Papyrus or Comic Sans. Yes, typography is that important to me and the work I create. Type speaks volumes and should never be an afterthought.

Logos are such fun to work on especially when they’re inspired by a little cabin in the woods that serves as the business’s office space. This rebrand of Cabin Communications updated their look and conveyed the personal approach to their small PR business. 🏡
Logos should reflect the brand—both tangible and intangible aspects of the business. Sometimes literal is the right approach and other times abstract is the way to go. Whichever the direction, it should connect with the essence of you and your business.✨
Do your business materials reflect who you are? Why or why not? ✨

Most assume designers love color and lots of it. Full rainbows for everyone, everywhere! Plus throw in some blue here and a little red there and voilà—it’s a successful design... or not. Color plays a vital role in a viewer’s perception of a design. You need to be conscious of color. The wrong color alienates—or worse, bores—the person you’re trying to reach. The right color delights the senses. It connects emotionally and psychologically. It makes a boring subject interesting and an interesting subject superbly exciting. 🌈
The BOSLER business card encourages recipients to fill in their own colors. It’s representative of our ability to suit your needs and your business. We’re here to provide structure for your branding but also allow for inspiration, creativity and flexibility in your business’s voice. 🌈
What’s your favorite color and why? I love orange for its bold presence and playful attitude. 🧡

Psst! I’ve got a secret. Are you ready? Here it is. I love what I do. Seriously love everything about being a designer. You’d think that after 20+ years of being in the business that I would get tired of it. But I haven’t. I love that the jobs I work on are so varied that it never gets boring. Design is problem solving in visual form. It’s the marriage of the left and right halves of the brain. I love solving the design challenges that a new business brings to the table or the struggles that an established business has. 🧠
Being in the business this long does have its challenges though. Staying fresh and cranking on the creativity means that I need to keep learning and honing my skills. Even after 20+ years I seek out new knowledge on the daily. Sometimes it’s as simple as learning a new software shortcut I didn’t know existed or viewing an archive of recently unearthed art. Other times it’s signing up for courses to expand my skills to keep up with rapidly changing technology. I’m not afraid of the new and unexplored, I embrace it. As Michelanglo said, “I am still learning.” 📚
What new thing have you learned lately?
