Hello everyone! 👋

Just got woken up for some blood work and vitals so I figured I would update everyone!

Yesterday is a bit of a blur as I was pretty out of it. I had the Sweetest doctor who was exactly what I needed. He held my hand and and walked me through the entire procedure. I can never get used to the right heart caths no matter how hard I try! During a right heart cath they begin by numbing your neck with a couple shots of lidocaine. After you are numb they make ap small incision in order to insert a catheter into a vein in your neck. To me, this feels similar to someone trying to screw a corkscrew into my neck.😑 Once they access your vein they guide the catheter into the right side of your heart and take measurements of the pressure inside your right atrium and right ventricle.

To spice things up a little they decided to test my pressures during exertion as well! I "exercised" on the table while the catheter was still in place and listened to a ton of pressure numbers being yelled out.

The results: My heart is not doing so great. They explained to me that when a healthy person exercises, their heart rate increases and their heart pumps more blood throughout their body. My heart rate increases quite a bit with little exertion but my heart is too sick and weak to pump more blood throughout my body. This is why sometimes something as small as turning over in bed brings on awful chest pain and shortness of breath. My heart basically does the opposite of what it should during exertion. pressures that should increase plummeted and vice versa..

While in recovery they let me know that I would definitely be admitted which although I was prepared for was still hard to hear. So this will be my home for the next few months while I wait for my beautiful new gifted heart. I know that this will all become a distant memory. One day I will look back and feel such pride for getting through this all... for now I feel grateful that this heart has hung in there and hopefully will behave for a few more months.🤪

If Dickens is a reliable source, with the worst of times sometimes comes the best of times. I told myself a story when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36: that I would suffer, but I would write. It was my bargain: I’d lose my health, my breast, one year. But I’d come out of it with a full-length book. It’s called STANDING IN THE FOREST OF BEING ALIVE, and I just found out Alice James Books will be publishing it in April 2023!

The road back to health is longer and more complex than I thought it would be, and I want to continue being transparent about what life after “active treatment” looks like. We’re still information-gathering about my heart failure, and I started several new meds over the past few weeks. But today, I signed a contract for my first full-length poetry collection. I signed it wearing a lymphedema compression sleeve and a heart monitor, but I signed it. Last night, Ilya took me out to dinner. Don’t worry, I only had a sip of champagne. But it tasted good as hell.

Finley is 2 months old today!

After his setbacks a few weeks ago, this week we restarted transplant assessment to determine whether he is a good candidate. Our fingers and toes are crossed that our little man can be listed.

He has made some baby steps this past week. In the last few days he is seeming more like himself. He is awake and alert more often, and not overly cranky when he is. He loves to look around and just take in everything happening around him. We even managed to get a couple small smiles out of him.

There is something in his eyes these last few days, when he stares intently at me. I’m still not sure if it’s recognition or determination or something else entirely. What I do know is when he is alert and his eyes lock on mine, I see an old soul. This poor wee babe who has been through so much more in 2 short months than anyone should have to go through in a lifetime.

I swear when he stares so intently at me I can almost hear him saying “I’m still here, Mom, and I’m not done fighting. I have so much left to see.”
