Serratus anterior release

What we do

the client lies on his side

we shift the lateral edge of the scapula medially and upward and simultaneously perform planar sliding movements with the other hand

then the pressure on the scapula is reduced and the movement is slowly and rhythmically repeated until an increase in the range of motion of the scapula and/or a decrease in tissue density is noted

For what:

with a "winged" scapula and poor scapular control

with limited arm raising and a feeling of shoulder instability

to improve scapular glide and relieve the trapezius/rotator cuff

Nuances

This is not a rib job: we are moving the shoulder blade, not pressing on the chest.

The direction is critical: medially + upward. Then the serratus anterior is in action, not the latissimus dorsi.

If a person starts to tense up or “turns on their back,” most likely, we have gone into the latissimus dorsi
