“Ceramics” (Gốm) have quietly accompanied the people of old Saigon through many ups and downs, standing as silent witnesses to history across generations.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the French colonial period, Saigon became a meeting point of many cultures. The skilled craftsmanship of Vietnamese artisans, the rich East Asian cultural identity of the Vietnamese people, and the Western aesthetic influences brought by the French together gave rise to distinctive ceramic styles that defined an era.

Biên Hòa and Lái Thiêu ceramics could be found in many corners of Saigon at the time — in home kitchens, on dining tables, in small shops, and along the city’s streets.
Each piece carries within it fragments of human life, preserving subtle traces of the past.

At Nhà Và Sài Gòn, we hope to introduce these time-worn ceramic pieces as part of “Saigon Living Heritage.”
They are not merely old objects, but a “Memory Station” — a place where the memories of a city are kept alive through small, everyday items.

Through them, we hope that people today may have the chance to touch and feel the space and time of old Saigon.

“도자기(Gốm)”는 옛 사이공 사람들과 함께 수많은 변천을 조용히 지나오며 여러 세대의 역사를 증명해 온 소중한 기념물입니다.
19세기 말부터 20세기 초 프랑스 식민지 시기, 다양한 문화가 교차하던 도시 사이공에서 장인의 숙련된 기술과 동양적인 정취가 짙은 옛 베트남 문화, 그리고 프랑스에서 들어온 서양의 미적 감각이 어우러져 그 시대를 대표하는 독특한 도자기들이 탄생했습니다.

비엔호아(Biên Hòa)와 라이티에우(Lái Thiêu) 도자기는 당시 사이공의 가정집 부엌, 식탁 위, 상점들, 그리고 거리 곳곳에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있었습니다.
각각의 “도자기 한 점”에는 삶의 여러 단면이 섬세하게 새겨져 있으며, 그 안에는 오래된 시간의 흔적들이 고스란히 담겨 있습니다.

Nhà Và Sài Gòn은 이러한 시간의 흔적이 스며든 “도자기”를 ‘사이공 생활 유산(Saigon Living Heritage)’의 한 부분으로 소개하고자 합니다.
이곳은 단순히 오래된 물건을 전시하는 공간이 아니라, 작은 일상 속 물건들을 통해 한 도시의 기억을 생생하게 간직한 **“기억의 정거장(Trạm ký ức)”**입니다.

이를 통해 오늘을 살아가는 사람들이 과거 사이공의 시간과 공간을 직접 “만지고 느낄 수 있는” 기회를 갖게 되기를 바랍니다.
