Happy Sabbath, I hope you get to rest from your labours today.

One of the big things I've been wrestling with lately is learning that my value is not based on how much or how little I produce, through my day or week. It is so easy to see our value in our work, to let it become our identity and then shape how we see ourselves. But as people created by a creator who loves us, we are inherently valuable and precious to Him. Nothing we do or don't do will change that. Let that soak in - rest in it.

Wanting affordable wardrobe staples that love on you AND the environment AND the person that made them?! Kinda sounds too good to be true.

One of the things I’ve personally struggled with is finding ethical clothing brands with affordable prices. Since all of our fabrics are second hand we manage to save a lot of the costs other brands might spend on fabrics like h**p or linen (as beautiful as they are) so that you can pay a reasonable price for your handmade garment!

Today is Sustainability Day!

At Iris and Ethel, we want our customers to feel empowered, supported and encouraged to make more eco-conscious consumer decisions and we know one of the best ways to do that is to be transparent and real with you guys about the processes behind running a sustainable small business.

When we source fabric, we hunt down second hand, vintage or deadstock fabrics - there is already so much textile waste out there so why create more if we don’t have to? Sometimes it is hard to find these ‘seconds’ in the colour and material our customers want - usually with our Bespoke orders - in this case we opt for the most environmentally friendly fabrics to manufacture such as linen or h**p and work with companies that share our vision for ethical, sustainable and people loving production. We do not and will never support cheap labor which is why Ella hand-makes everything herself - at some point in the future we hope to have enough money to pay others well to do this.

Some little things you can do to support sustainable practises is to buy locally made/grown produce, start collecting and recycling your soft plastics and put a little bit of background research into your next clothing haul so you are aware of the kinds of values and practises you’re supporting with your money. There are loads of small sustainable businesses doing it tough in lockdown that need our support and love and whose lives you can directly impact by buying from them. How cool!
