“... The kerongsang worn by the Nyonya are easily recognized since they feature gemstones throughout the designs. Chinese goldsmiths were also very fond of motifs such as birds, butterflies and shells.

Malay craftsmen have created quite different designs because Islam forbids its followers to draw or carve animals in any pattern or decoration. Most of the existing examples of Malay kerongsang are decorated with motifs of vegetation, flowers, or a crescent moon and star...”.
