August is always a special month for us at Barrydale Hand Weavers, as it’s the anniversary of Kate and Arran buying the business and if you’ve not heard the story before, here are the highlights.
Some journeys feel both long and short at the same time.
For Kate and Arran Bastable, the path to Barrydale Hand Weavers began on a family visit to this tiny Karoo town. They fell in love with the textiles at first sight — and even wrapped their first born baby in one of the blankets.
When the chance came in 2018 to take over the business from family friend Carol Morris, the decision was swift… but not simple. It meant three young children, a move from Scotland to South Africa, two big career changes, and a complete rethink of what mattered most.
In short: it was an intentional choice to slow down.
And the story stretches further back still. The skilled makers who create the cloth we love had already been part of this place for years. They remain at the heart of everything we do — now with more space than ever to grow, share their craft, and shape what comes next.
Product. Process. People.
That’s what we’re about.
