The Rectory Building dates back to 1815 and was built on open land (previously Government owned “Shambles” abattoir) alongside the newly erected St George’s Church as a parsonage, the land granted by Colonial Government. In 1816, a school room was added (first school in Simon’s Town). In 1819, a flood destroyed the church and badly damaged the parsonage which was later repaired. In 1849, the property was transferred by Deed to the Anglican Church. An early 1890 photograph shows a simple two storey with covered veranda. In 1904, the building was converted to shops and in 1909 an upstairs balcony was added and advertised as the St Leger Balcony for fine meals. In 1930 the back rooms were consolidated to a two roomed flat and an identical upstairs floor was added. The Kalidas family have been in business in Simon’s Town since 1909 and the building is currently home to Kalidas Clothing, Footwear and Swimwear and Harry’s Surf Shop.
