Filippo Ganna didn't just win the only time trial of the 2026 Giro d'Italia. He rewrote the Grand Tour record books.

The Italian champion lit up the 42km course from Viareggio to Massa on Tuesday, stopping the clock at 45:53. The average speed: 54.921 km/h. That figure is now the fastest ever recorded for any Grand Tour time trial of 40 kilometres or longer, eclipsing David Millar's 54.351 km/h from the 2003 Tour de France.

This was the longest Giro ITT in over a decade and was billed as a duel between specialists and GC contenders. Instead it became a one-man exhibition. Ganna caught eight riders along the Tuscan coast, posted the fastest split at every checkpoint, and put 1:54 into Netcompany Ineos teammate Thymen Arensman in second. Rémi Cavagna of Groupama-FDJ United took third at 1:59, the only other rider within two minutes.

For Ganna, this was his 8th Giro stage win and his 7th Giro time trial victory, drawing him level with Eddy Merckx's all-time record for ITT wins at the Corsa Rosa.

The GC fight delivered its own drama. Afonso Eulálio rode the time trial of his life to limit the damage and keep the maglia rosa by 27 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard, who could only manage 13th on the day. Arensman's ride moved him to third overall.

Ganna's next target is already named. Stage 18 finishes in his hometown of Verbania.
