Exactly 10 years ago, in my Uni’s theoretical paper supporting my concept Afro Grunge, I wrote. …Grunge was first encountered in the late eighties until mid-nighties; it started as a sub genre of rock music that sounded fuzzy and distorted carrying elements of punk and heavy metal. Although there is no philosophy set in stone about grunge as a culture, it had an underlying theme that showed a frustration towards society’s way of doing things. (Hertz & Roessner (eds), 2015:74). Its typical look was LAYERED AND UNTIDY MADE UP OF TORN CLOTHES; oversized t shirts, flannel shirts, boots and messy hair.

I consider my jackets to be grunge as f**k! Not only style interpretation wise but as a reject of fast and excessive fashion. Every month there’s a new trend that needs thousands of clothes to be produced so that people can look trendy.

My jackets are made with what’s left over from clothing production, donated fabrics meant to be discarded, they take weeks to complete and stylistcially echo elements of how grunge was described.

If this isn’t Afro Grunge to the core I don’t know what is baby! Oh and yes, reading my old papers has been exciting for me and keeping creatively “caption” nourished because sometimes I feel lost with creative writing. 🖤

Inspiration for me has always come from multiple sources featuring what I am (know). This is a direct representation of that, a mix of materials at my disposal combined with a the creation skill I have and this is a result. A one of one jacket that re creates what newness means in garment making.
