Veteran war correspondent Janine di Giovanni has described the war in Gaza as unlike anything she has witnessed in more than three decades reporting from conflict zones around the world
In remarks widely shared online, di Giovanni said that despite covering 18 wars over 35 years-including conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, Irag and Svria-she had never encountered a situation comparable to Gaza,
"I've reported 18 wars over 35 years. I've been shot at, kidnapped, threatened, nearly r***d. I've lost friends from Saraievo to Syria. I thought I'd seen the worst of humanity. I was wrong. Nothing compares to Gaza - or the complicity letting it happen,"' she said
Di Giovanni is one of the world's most recognised conflict reporters, having spent decades documenting wars, humanitarian crises and alleged war crimes across multiple continents. Her reporting from the siege of Sarajevo and other major conflicts has earned international recognition for its focus on civilians caught in war.
Currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of The Reckoning Project, an organisation that documents evidence of alleged war crimes for future accountability efforts. di Giovanni has continued to advocate for the protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law
Her comments come amid growing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. where months of conflict have resulted in widespread destruction, mass displacement and mounting civiliar casualties. Human rights organisations, aid agencies and United Nations officials have repeatedly warned ofthe devastating impact of the war on Gaza's civilian population.
Di Giovanni's remarks have resonated widely because of her extensive experience reporting from some of the most violent conflicts of the modern era, adding to ongoing global debates over accountability, civilian protection and the international response to the law.
