This project first and foremost birthed from my mother’s love for working with her hands and more specifically making clothing. I remember when we were young children my mother was still learning to make the most basic of clothing items, and we were her guinea pigs. They were funny looking shirts and sweatpants that served the purpose of clothing us and wrapping us with love rather than serving as
a piece of fashion or an enhancement of personal style. About twenty years have passed since those early days, time in which my mother has honed her skills as a professional seamstress and pattern maker through countless hours of apprenticeship
The project started out small, with my mother making me stretch pants and sleeveless shirts for yoga. We started with normal clean colours, but soon experimented with funky fabrics and prints hinting towards the psychedelic. We branched out and started developing other pieces of clothing, I would get an idea for something, or express a desire for a certain piece of clothing that I couldn’t find and we would embark on the mission of developing said piece. My mother and I would frequent fabric stores in search of fabric which catches the eye. It is then that we realised the importance of fabric, an item of clothing made with love and good fabric generally results in a masterpiece. She made me shorts, t-shirts, flowing white shirts in various styles, madiba-style shirts, semi-formal long pants, yoga mat bags, sling bags and she event crochet’d me a technicolour jersey with a matching pair of pants. The pursuit of creating new and interesting pieces continues and is something that brings endless joy to both our lives.
