The iconic Durban Fashion Fair (DFF), brought to you by the eThekwini Municipality, has come a long way since its inception in 2012 when it took place over a single evening with just six shows and 12 designers. Now, this fashion extravaganza boasts an array of international, national and emerging designers showcasing their creations on the catwalk and has become a highlight on the annual fashion c
alendar. Currently, the DFF includes at least five shows per evening over four days and features over 50 designers. It encourages linkages between local design talent and the world of fashion retail and even includes a buyers’ lounge. Not only has the eThekwini Municipality supported designers through the creation of the DFF, but it has also created invaluable mentorship platforms for young designers, new faces/potential models without previous experience and provided courses on hair and make- up. This has given the youth of eThekwini an exciting opportunity to break into modelling and fashion related industries. The DFF is also not confined to a single week. Throughout the year, the organisers create opportunities for design talents via pop up shops and educational workshops. They are also on hand to proudly support and encourage local designers who are showcasing their creations on other platforms within the greater eThekwini Municipality, nationally and internationally!
