Forty-eight small blocks. Every one of them done.

Eleven days ago there were none. This morning there are forty-eight, and seven of the thirteen big ones besides.

Then the join. Then the border. Then it goes to Droogtehulp, for the farming families carrying this drought.

I did not expect it to move this fast.

What do you think?

Namaqualand in full bloom and the colours I chose for Hilda Steyn's upcoming Namaqua Blanket pattern, which I am busy testing.

Hilda, of Ilona Slow Life Creations has designed this pattern for Droogte Hulp met Burre Burger NPC and all pattern sales will go directly to them, as will 25% of each Namaqua Blanket kit. This one means a lot to me, Hilda has poured so much into it, and every kit sold will put real help behind a farmer having a hard season.

Four more colourways still to come, I'll share them as the testing continues.

The pattern and kits launch early October, so right now the biggest help you can give is spreading the word. Like this if it speaks to you, tell us in the comments, and share it with anyone who'd want to be part of it, every share gets us closer to more support for Droogte Hulp when the pattern and kits are released..

Wondering what's in my basket?

These are the colours I have chosen for Hilda Steyn's (Ilona Slow Life Creations) new crochet pattern - the Namaqua Blanket. Hilda is designing this blanket in aid of Droogte Hulp met Burre Burger NPC, a charity that helps farmers in times of need. With the 2026 El Nino event shaping up to become historic, the farmers are going to need all the help they can get to keep up our food supply.

All the proceeds from the pattern sales, once it is published will go directly to Droogte hulp and 25% of all the kit sales will be donated to them.

Keep an eye on our posts to watch the progress, share with your friends, we hope you'll all be making a Namaqua Blanket in the near future too!

Thirty of the forty-eight small blocks. Six days in.

Twelve more since Monday, which is more than I expected from a week that also involved a gravel road and a great deal of stopping to photograph flowers.

Eighteen small ones to go, then the thirteen big ones, then the join, then the border. Every block is going towards Droogtehulp and the farming families carrying this drought.

Are you going to support this fund raising initiative? Let me know in the comments.

I keep catching myself looking down at this cloak like I'm rediscovering it. Every square holds a memory of where I was when I made it - which evening, which mood, which cup of tea. That's what mindful making gives you: an object that's actually a timeline. The wildflower colours of the West Coast are woven right through it, round after round. Slow hands, slow life.

Some projects stay with you long after they're finished.

I made this Noah's Ark quilt for a friend's baby a good few years back, no prizes for guessing his name! Finding the photo again brought back all the love that went into it.

The animals are knitted using our African Animal patterns, and Noah is also knit and stitched onto the quilt. The fabric is our hand dyed cotton, I used the natural movement from the dyeing process to create the cloudy sky and the waves, and hand painted the ark fabric to get the look of wood.

A proper labour of love, and one of my favourite quilts I've made.

The African Animal patterns used for the animals are available from ColourSpun online.
