~Every Installation Begins With a Dream~

Some of my greatest joy is found in the making.

Before a single flower is placed there’s a vision, measurements, hardware to build and countless little details to bring together. I’ve always loved creating the structures for my floral installations myself. There is something incredibly satisfying about watching an idea slowly take shape with my own hands.

This weekend, those hands were busy creating these floral installations for a beautiful new addition to our little village of Stanford.

My heart is so full. I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out, and I truly hope they bring beauty, joy and a warm welcome to everyone who walks through the door. May they become part of the happy memories made in this lovely space.

A heartfelt thank you to my wonderful hubby who was by my side helping to install the pieces.

If you’re wandering through Stanford, do pop into
I hope you’ll find something delicious to enjoy…

~Winter Has Settled Gently…~

Cold mornings, rain on the windows, mist hanging over the fields, and that familiar invitation to slow down and embrace the beauty of the season.

I was so excited to receive my very special parcel from this week…my beautiful hand-knitted beanie to match my mittens…

As I carefully unwrapped it, little Roxy was right by my side, completely intrigued by what was inside. She watched every move with such curiosity, sniffing the parcel and inspecting my new beanie as though she knew it was something truly special. It was such a sweet little moment that made me smile.

With Winter well and truly here in the Western Cape, my new beanie and treasured mittens have already become my favourite companions for cold, rainy days.

And while I’ve been embracing this slower season of Wintering, I’ve also been quietly creating something very special behind the scenes…

I can’t wait to share it with you soon.

~Apple Pie & Cosy Days~

Oh the joy of making an Apple Pie from scratch…

It begins long before the first bite. It starts with choosing the apples. My favourite will always be Pink Ladies…their beautiful rosy blush is enough to inspire me even before I’ve even begun. Their name alone makes me smile.

I always make my own pastry. There’s something deeply satisfying about bringing it together with your hands, rolling it out, gently preparing the apples with cinnamon and warm spices, and filling the kitchen with a fragrance that feels like home.

The scent takes me back to my childhood. My Mother was forever cooking and baking, patiently teaching us from a very young age. Looking back, I realise she wasn’t simply sharing recipes, she was cultivating a lifelong love of creating, nurturing and gathering around the table.

Truth be told, time spent in the kitchen is never just about preparing food. It’s about slowing down, creating with my hands and finding joy in the everyday.

Once the baking was done, I slipped on my beautiful hand-knitted mittens, lovingly made just for me by dear Shirley They make every Winter walk a little cosier, and I can hardly wait for the matching beanie she knitted. Some things are simply too lovely not to look forward to.

Then came my favourite part of the day…layering up, putting on beautiful music, making a cup of tea, curling up with a good book, while my handmade beeswax candles flicker nearby…

This, to me, is the gentle art of Wintering.

A season not to rush, but to savour.

A Winter’s day filled with inspiration, gratitude and quiet contentment.

“Winter is not the end of the story. It is the season that teaches us to cherish warmth, beauty and home.”

~Winter Solstice, Father’s Day & The Simple Joys of Family~

This year’s Winter Solstice arrived wrapped in the most perfect gift…a windless day by the sea, shared with the people I love most.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, a gentle reminder that from this point forward, the days slowly begin to grow longer and the light returns.

And somehow, this year it felt even more special because it also happened to be Father’s Day.

Who needs a fancy restaurant when you can sit on the beach together, sharing fish and chips with sand between your toes and the sound of the waves nearby.

Mishka made her Dad the most wonderful Father’s Day Card, and the three of us spent the afternoon writing Winter Solstice in the sand before setting off to collect shells, stones and pieces of bamboo to decorate it. Such a simple activity, yet one that brought so much joy.

We lingered until late afternoon, enjoying slices of store-bought milk tart as the sun slowly began its descent. I usually arrive with a homemade dessert in hand, but perhaps part of Winter’s lesson is learning to slow down and letting simple be enough.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in soft shades of gold, I found myself feeling incredibly grateful.

Grateful for these ordinary days that somehow become extraordinary. Grateful for a daughter who is growing into a remarkable young woman. And grateful for who is the most wonderful Father a daughter could ask for.

He has always treated Mishka like a princess, while at the same time teaching her something far more valuable, how a woman should be respected, cherished and loved. Thank you, my love, for leading by example and for being the kind of Father every daughter deserves.

These are the days that remind us that the richest life is often found in the simplest moments.

✨Here’s to longer days ahead, family, gratitude, and memories to treasure forever.

~The River Runs Through Our Story~

On Saturday, we joined the annual Penguin Plunge, organised by Stanford Rotary, to celebrate the Winter Solstice here in the Southern hemisphere.

We absolutely love this wonderful local tradition. Dressing up is half the fun, and we were delighted to win Best Dressed for the second year in a row! There is something rather special about sharing laughter, community spirit, glüwhein and a plunge into the icy water.

But for us, the Klein River carries a deeper meaning.

In September 2023 this river changed our lives forever. Like many others, we were uprooted and faced one of the most challenging seasons of our lives. Experiences like that leave a mark on you. They change your perspective and deepen your appreciation for the things that truly matter.

Swimming in that same river this weekend, surrounded by friends and neighbours, I was reminded of how far we’ve come.

The Klein River will always be part of our story, not only because of what happened, but because of everything that followed…resilience, new beginnings, friendship, community and finding our forever home.

We are incredibly grateful to live in this beautiful village and to be part of a community that supports one another through life’s storms and celebrates together when brighter days arrive.

✨Here’s to longer days, warm hearts and the people who make a place feel like home.

What a privilege it is to call Stanford home.

~The Small Things That Carry Us Through Winter~

There are days in Winter when the garden seems to be sleeping, and then Nasturtiums appear…bright and cheerful…

I imagine Nasturtiums as tiny garden fairies dressed in orange and gold, popping up here and there to remind us that Spring is quietly stitching itself together beneath the soil.

This week, while gathering eggs and pottering through the garden, I noticed their happy faces peeking through the Winter beds. It felt like receiving a little letter from the season ahead.

Happiness lives in the smallest things. A vase of flowers in the kitchen, a favourite teacup, the scent of something baking in the oven, or a treasured gift made with love.

Another great joy is wearing the most beautiful apron gifted to me by my mother-in-law. Knowing it was made especially for me makes every moment spent cooking, baking and pottering about in the kitchen feel just a little more special.

Beeswax candles handmade by me flicker throughout our home, casting pools of golden light and adding yet another touch of magic to Winter. Their gentle honeyed glow dances across collected treasures, vintage finds and well-loved corners, making even the coldest days feel cosy and full of wonder.

Perhaps Winter isn’t something to endure after all. Perhaps it is a season of collecting small treasures…a flower blooming, a handmade apron stitched with love, the warm glow of candlelight, birds gathering in the garden and the quiet promise that brighter days are on the way.

What little treasures are brightening your Winter days?

~The Beauty of Wintering~

This long weekend was just what my heart needed.

A little family day trip to McGregor, learning some wonderful new skills, and returning home inspired and refreshed. One of the highlights was a delicious brunch lovingly prepared by Mishka, who made homemade crumpets topped with berry coulis and crispy bacon, such a treat and proud mom moment.

We ended the weekend gathered around a backyard barbecue, enjoying savoury s’mores on the grill and soaking up the simple joy of being together.

These slower Winter days remind me of the beauty of “Wintering”, embracing the quieter season, gathering around the table, learning new things, making memories, and allowing space to recharge before the busy months ahead.

My cup feels full and my creative spirit refreshed as I prepare for the upcoming Stanford Winter Market and the winter holiday workshops I’ll be hosting.

How did you spend your long weekend?

~Wintering Before the Bloom~

Lately, I’ve been embracing the gentle art of Wintering…

Wintering isn’t simply a season. It’s slowing down without standing still. It’s gathering ideas, seeking inspiration, and feeding both body and soul with all the beauty and coziness that Winter has to offer. It’s spending quiet moments dreaming, creating, planning and allowing new possibilities to take root beneath the surface.

Nature does not bloom all year round. There is a season for resting, a season for preparing, and then a season for flourishing.

For me, this Winter is filled with inspiration, and excitement as plans quietly unfold behind the scenes for one of my favourite times of the year, Stanford In Bloom and Chelsea Flowers in Stanford, taking place from 12-27 September 2026 in Stanford. Tickets are now available, visit the Stanford In Bloom Website https://stanfordinbloom.co.za

While the village rests beneath Winter skies, seeds are being planted, ideas are being nurtured, and wonderful things are beginning to take shape. Before long, our beloved village will once again burst into colour, creativity, flowers and celebration as we welcome thousands of visitors from near and far.

I’m so excited about what lies ahead and cannot wait to share more of the journey with you in the coming weeks and months.

But for now, I am Wintering.

Gathering inspiration.
Dreaming big dreams.
Nurturing creative ideas.
Quietly preparing for all that is yet to bloom.

What are you Wintering right now?

✨~Forever Chasing Stars~✨

Can we take a moment for this sweet little vintage dress I thrifted some time ago…

Every time I wear it, I’m transported back to childhood, to a world where magic felt real, possibilities were endless, and dreams seemed close enough to touch.

Part of me still wishes I could stay that little girl forever, but perhaps growing up doesn’t mean letting go of wonder.

Here’s to never losing my hopes and dreams, always believing in a little bit of magic, and continuing to chase those dreams while I reach for the stars. 💫

What keeps your inner child alive?

~ Our Floral Kingdom Took Its Place On The World Stage~

Last week I had the incredible privilege of assisting with a fynbos installation at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in collaboration with the Grootbos Foundation and it is difficult to put into words just how meaningful the experience was for me.

To be entrusted by a foundation whose conservation work and vision I admire so deeply felt like such an honour. Standing side by side with their team, working with some of the most breathtaking fynbos material sourced from our region, reminded me once again how extraordinary our natural heritage truly is.

Fynbos is not simply beautiful, it tells the story of place, resilience, biodiversity and identity. Every stem, texture and botanical detail carried the spirit of the landscape we call home.

What made this year feel especially significant is the continued global rise of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon as it moves closer to becoming Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major, a monumental moment not only for Cape Town, but for South Africa and the African continent as a whole.

As an official charity partner of the marathon, Grootbos Foundation’s involvement extends far beyond the race itself. Their mission is rooted in conserving the globally unique Cape Floral Kingdom while uplifting local communities through conservation, education, skills development and environmental stewardship.

The marathon created a powerful platform to introduce thousands of local and international visitors to the beauty and ecological importance of our fynbos landscapes, landscapes found nowhere else on earth.

What moved me most deeply was that the flowers and natural materials from our region could become part of something so much bigger, a global event carrying stories of conservation,
community, heritage and hope.

It was incredibly meaningful to play a part in Grootbos Foundation’s vision and mission during such an important moment for South African sport, conservation and identity.

I am so proud of what our floral kingdom represents to the world.
