They told him to ride the horse.

He chose to crouch beside the box instead.

The black stallion reared behind him — wild, unbridled, kicking up the red earth of his father’s father’s land. Dust caught in the rhinestones on his collar and made them flash like lightning. That was the signal. _Control isn’t in the saddle_, Nurseking thought. _It’s in the stillness before the gallop._

His eyes were closed but he saw everything. The third eye on his brow was open — gold paint, wet from dawn. He heard the horse’s breath, the tremble in the soil, the whisper of the box beneath his palm. It was the same one from the temple. Same masks, same geometry. Ancestry doesn’t change. Only the room does.

This wasn’t the red carpet. This was the field before the carpet was woven. No throne, no neon. Just sky the color of a bruise and earth that remembered every king who bled into it.

The blue suit was new — Victoria Falls baptized in satin. He’d worn it to show them he could be calm and still be a storm. The platform boots sank half an inch into the ground. Good. Let the earth take his measure. Let it know who was back.

The horse screamed. It wanted war. It wanted a rider.

He exhaled.

Some kings conquer by charging.

He conquered by crouching. By listening to the box. By letting the wild thing tire itself out trying to understand him.

When he finally stood, the horse would bow. Not because he broke it.

Because he never asked it to carry him.

He was already carrying the kingdom.

_🪶RED CARPET IS THE THRONE. But first, you learn to kneel in the dirt. ZIMBO coded._

They called him _Nurseking_ because he could stop a hemorrhage with a glance and start a riot with a bassline. But tonight, no one was bleeding.

He crouched at the edge of the temple floor, cowries clattering against crimson silk like rain on a tin roof. The brass at his throat was old — borrowed from his grandmother’s wedding chest — but the neon under it was new. Lime green, illegal in the village after sunset. He wore both. That was the code: `ZIMBO coded`. Past and future stitched together with an orange drawstring.

The elders had woven those baskets on the wall behind him. Circles within circles. They said the patterns were prayers. He’d taken the same geometry and printed it in black on red satin, then cut it into streetwear. Ancestry wasn’t a costume. It was a power source.

His turban held three flags: black for the soil, fuchsia for the wound, lime for the voltage. The shells sewn into his robe were currency from a time before borders. The snakeskin on his arm was from last season’s tour — he’d wrestled the sound guy for it and won. Even the chunky boots were deliberate. _If the red carpet is the throne_, he thought, _then I’m bringing my own steps._

A girl peeked from behind the curtain. “They’re ready for you, King.”

He didn’t stand yet. He let the gold rings on his neck catch the light one more time. Let the earrings spin. Let the face beat — brows carved like Murehwa mountains, lips dipped in gold dust — tell the story before he opened his mouth.

But first, he had to bless the temple.

He exhaled, and the shells whispered. He rose, and the bass dropped in his chest.

The throne wasn’t at the end of the red carpet.

He was the throne. And he was walking.

They told the throne to come to me.

So I sat.

Baroque on my body.
Future in my blood.
Cowries in my DNA.
Not your ancestor’s regalia.
Not your future’s costume.
I am the portal.

Wrapped in black because I’m sacred.
Blooming in sunflowers because I’m resilient.
Covered, protected, rooted, rising.
I don’t ask for access. I grant it.
