I never planned on starting a breast pump company.

When I had my first daughter in 2020, I was gifted a wearable pump from an overseas brand and it completely changed my breastfeeding journey.

It gave me freedom.
It made pumping feel manageable.
And it allowed me to continue breastfeeding after returning to work.

Then one day it stopped working.

Even though it was replaced under warranty, I still had to wait weeks for the replacement to arrive in South Africa. During that time I rented a traditional hospital-grade pump and I remember thinking how difficult and restrictive pumping suddenly felt again after experiencing wearable pumping.

And honestly, that was really the beginning of Gem.

I became slightly obsessed with trying to understand why wearable pumping still felt so inaccessible for so many South African moms and whether there was a way to create something better locally.

What started as a very personal frustration slowly turned into research, testing, conversations with moms and eventually… Gem ✨

Looking back now, it’s quite surreal to think that something which started during my own breastfeeding journey has become such a big part of my life.

And I think this is probably the first time I’ve properly shared this story here 🤍

It’s been there since pregnancy, made in tiny amounts for tiny tummies.

Most moms notice more milk between day 2–5 after birth, but this can take longer after a C-section, long labour, blood loss, or time away from baby.

What really matters is choosing the correct breast shield/fl**ge size so your ni**le can move comfortably in the tunnel and the pump can work effectively.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 👇
• Measure the width of your ni**le at the base, where it meets the ar**la
• Do not include the ar**la in your measurement
• Add 2–4mm to allow for ni**le movement while pumping
• Choose the fl**ge size closest to that adjusted measurement
