When Hendrik, aka the husband, first started talking about retiring from the mine, there was always that little thought in the back of my mind: Are we going to create tension by working together?
Well… since he resigned, it feels like the sh*t hits the fan at work every single day, with a new crisis popping up around every corner!
Honestly, I don’t know how I would have coped without him. Machines and technology are wonderful, but when they’re running 24/7, things break. Sometimes they need fixing, and sometimes they need a new plan or two to work better.
That’s where Hendrik shines. He’s brilliant at solving problems. I don’t want to make his head too big, haha, but he really can fix just about anything—or come up with a plan to make it work somehow.
He’s extremely organised, too, and highly irritated by my creative, arty side… which usually means chaos and a bit of “where did I put that?” everywhere.
I think the mine helped prepare him for this. It wasn’t always the nicest place to work, but its systems, procedures, SOPs and forms taught him a lot—and helped us build a more structured environment at Inventibite.
I’m usually in the kitchen, playing with new product ideas and developing and testing recipes. Hendrik is on the factory floor, working with the machines and keeping an eye on quality checks.
I’m so proud of the team we make and of how we work together. I barely even see him during the day, even though we’re in the same factory, haha—so I’d say all is well… as long as he remembers that I’m the boss! 😂
