The legend of Jim green

Jim green footwear was born out of humble beginnings in a garage in New Hanover in 1992, with the idea in mind of making a boot that lasts and lasts… With only a few styles hand crafted to start, Jim Green soon started to gain a reputation amongst the local community and live up to its name of being tough, rugged, go the distance boots. It wasn’t long before Jim Green boo

ts started to find their way into cities country wide and soon Jim Green grew to a healthy product range, producing 20 pairs a day. The name Jim Green comes from a sneaky little frog that hangs by the river edge, this frog being used by questionable fisherman at local fly fishing competitions to illegally hook the winning catch. With the popularity of Jim Green growing it soon found itself a new home on the Midlands Meander. Manufacturing of the boots was then slowly being handed onto Crouch Footwear in Pietermaritzburg, where with many years of shoe making experience perfected the art of making a pair of Jim Green boots. It was there that Jim Green got a strong footing in the market place and became a legend in its own for their durability, comfort and quality. Crouch Footwear eventually acquired Jim Green in the year 2000 and immediately introduced a safety and specialist footwear to the range. Along with this a dedicated full time line available for re-soling and custom made requests was added. Today Jim Green is still South Africa’s number one locally made safety and hiking boot, being worn by our countries major telecommunications groups, large corporations and still remains a local favourite amongst the farmers.

African Rangers and Rhino Conservation🦏

Moving Giants with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife KZN Wildlife’s Game Capture Unit Some conservation happens in stillness and some moves fast in helicopters overhead, teams on the ground and a two ton rhino waking up in a crate.🚁

The Game Capture Unit handles the physical side of conservation: translocating animals, responding to escapes, treating injuries and supporting reserves across southern Africa.💉💊

“We’re basically the guys that carry out the physical conservation work,” says JP van Heerden. “Moving animals from point A to point B. ”Every operation is different, adds Unit Manager Dumisane Zwane. “You have to be ready for anything.” Based in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, birthplace of many rhino founder populations, the team still carries out these delicate translocations to date. A vet darts from a helicopter, the ground crew monitors vitals, then guides the partially woken rhino into a crate for transport.📍

Challenges remain prominant despite the hard work the team puts in such as poaching pressure, budget cuts and growing human wildlife conflict. Yet through partnerships and community trust, coexistence is growing stronger.🤝

“You spend a lot of time out in the bush,” says van Heerden. “And the more time you spend, the more you understand it.”🌿

We raise our hats to the team making it happen on the ground and protecting one of Africa’s greatest creatures🦏
The program is a collaboration between Jim Green Footwear and the GameRangersAssociationofAfrica

Jim Greens doing the Job at 17 000 feet🏔️🇰🇪

Cold, steep and unforgiving, with peaks reaching over 17 000 feet, dense forests, and unpredictable weather, this is the challenging terrain the Mount Kenya Trust (MKT) has been safeguarding for over 25 years.🤯

From a small team of two to 67 dedicated member, mostly rangers, fencers and monitors working in the field The MKT team tackles evolving threats like climate driven fires, illegal logging, water extraction and more. Patrols happen mostly on foot, often in partnership with Kenya Wildlife Service, Forest Service, and community scouts. Communication drops, rivers swell and sometimes the only way in is by helicopter.🚁

But conservation here goes far beyond patrols. MKT weaves together ecosystem restoration, livelihoods and community wellbeing. Families grow trees alongside food crops, community nurseries generate income and health & education programs reach remote areas because protecting the mountain only works when people’s needs are met too.🌾

The rangers and scouts keep showing up, not just for the salary, but because they’re protecting their own future. Through initiatives like Boots for Rangers, MKT equips those on the frontlines because even the every ounce of support makes a big difference on this vast, rugged landscape.🥾

The goal? Stronger community ownership, so that in the years ahead, local people lead the protection of this vital water catchment that feeds millions.🍎

From Rocks to Remote Islands in African Rangers🪨🏝️

From farm weekends in Cradock turning over rocks and spotting birds, to shaping stories for Go! magazine Toast Coetzer has always paid close attention to the world.🗺️

After journalism at Rhodes and a brush with Laugh it Off’s bold satire, he’s spent years writing, editing, and championing clear, grounded storytelling. He co-runs the independent magazine Ons Klyntji(oldest Afrikaans magazine), giving first-time writers (from school kids to seventy-somethings) a place to be published and fronts the folk-punk band The Buckfever Underground.✍️📸🎸

His travels favour remote islands, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena, Marion for example, places that quietly remind you you’re not that important. Writing about places inevitably encourages people to visit them, and tourism, while necessary, comes with pressure. “You want people to go,” he says, “but you also want them to understand how to be there.”📍

Toast Coetzer has a simple approach in life a notebook, camera and a trusty pair of Jim Green African Rangers that go everywhere he does.🥾

Because when nothing else demands your attention, you can finally see what’s right in front of you. 🌞
