How to clean your oilskin coat is the most common question—and it's totally understandable why. An oilskin is not like any other piece of clothing in your closet, and it cannot be treated like any other item either.

Now, the really great thing about oilskins is that they are low maintenance. You would think that not being able to wash it makes it more difficult to clean, but it's the opposite.

The oilskin creates a surface that dust and dirt don't really settle on, so the outside of your coat can easily be brushed clean, and it takes just minutes.

The lining can be cleaned by rinsing the coat in a bathtub of cold water. Using a spray bottle with a vinegar solution, you can spray the armpits, collar, and key areas (or the entire lining) and give it a bit of a scrub. The vinegar disinfects the lining and neutralizes odors... and no, the jacket does not smell like vinegar when you are done, so don't worry.
