🌿 10 Years of Faith, Courage & Hard Work
Ten years ago, my life changed in a way I never expected.
After being diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer, I knew that continuing in a highly demanding job would not be good for my health. I made the difficult decision to resign — without knowing what my next step would be.
What I did know was sewing.
I grew up surrounded by creativity. My mom and grandmother were always sewing and knitting, and from a very young age, my twin sister and I were right there with them. When I say we, I mean the two of us — always together, always creating. I also took sewing classes from Grade 3 right through to Grade 12. Sewing was never just a skill — it was part of who I am.
So I started with what I knew.
I borrowed a sewing machine and made sure it was in perfect condition. I had learned how to service machines myself, so I ensured every stitch was strong and professional. My very first products were dog beds. I thought if I could sell them at the local market, I could slowly build a customer base and grow from there.
At first, business was slow — especially in Durban summer when dog beds aren’t exactly in demand! I sold dog beds, treats, clothing, and toys. Slowly but surely, things began to pick up. By winter, the dog beds were selling fast.
Customers began asking, “Do you make these yourself?”
When I said yes, they started asking if I could make cushions, covers, and other custom items.
That’s how it began.
I saved every cent I earned from the market and eventually bought my first industrial sewing machine. Work increased, and I found myself sewing late into the night. My small kitchen became my sewing room. When we had large projects, we set up outside on the stoep.
As things grew, I recruited a friend to help cut patterns and assist with bigger jobs. One year later, I was able to build a small wooden cabin to work from.
Then opportunity knocked again — I found someone selling wooden pallets for R5 each. I bought a truckload and slowly expanded the cabin, piece by piece, into the workspace it is today.
From borrowed machine…
To kitchen workshop…
To stoep production line…
To wooden cabin studio.
Today, we are a small but proud team of three. I have two wonderful ladies working alongside me, and we are deeply grateful for the incredible support from our local community in KZN.
For 10 years, we have built this business with faith, determination, and many late nights. We still dream of one day having a proper building where we won’t have to worry about rain and storms affecting our work — but we are proud of how far we have come.
