May not have been in the shop today, but was somewhere just as fun…

Camilo Hats is prepping their new studio in Balmain, Sydney, and you’ll HAVE to go visit if you’re in the area.

Hamish, Caity and Jhonny will have you sorted with the best Panama hats this side of Ecuador.

For those in Brissy, new summer stock is already on the shelves, and some cool new stuff is on the way.

So this one was a lot of fun.
Very light clean but mostly just needed to get it back in one piece and wearable again for another generation.

The sweatband was CACTUS and the original outer band was falling apart, but at least all there. I was able to clean that up surprisingly well and get it all back in one piece again! I always recommend trying the keep all the original bits on older hats, as they’ve got so much character. Not always possible, but damn do I try.

No question on replacing the sweatband though. I also try and keep the nameplates or branding, and somehow add/attach it to the new hat, but for this one I’ve tried something new that I’ve been playing with a while - freehand foiling.

With my powers of nice handwriting and stubbornness, I’ll now be offering this with replacement sweatbands.

Helen has brought me a few hats since I opened, but this one is special. Her mum’s Akubra ‘Great White’ had seen greater days, but now it’s back to its former glory. Still a little faded, a little nibbled, but back to how she remembers it. And now, it can also be a living memory for her family, and something that can live on through them.

I talk about this in the shop - how much a hat can really MEAN to someone. I do a lot of repair work on hats and for people who’ve been told by others ‘it’s not worth it’.

Pardon my French but that can f**k ALL the way off. Hats can become so loved, and so ingrained in a persons identity that it would be like chucking out a part of yourself. Or throwing away a loved one.

The work sometimes isn’t easy, and it’s not cheap. But it’s GOOD work. And meaningful. Sometimes priceless.

I’m proud to say I’ve seen many grown adults cry when collecting their hats from me. It was Mum’s favourite hat. The one Grandad wore every day. The last thing they have from their brother, their mate, their memories of joy and love, brought in some small way back to life.

That’s why I do it. If I wanted to just sell hats and make money, there are much easier ways to do it. This way I get to pour my love and knowledge and obsession for this weird and wonderful craft into something meaningful as well as DAMN cool.

Fun shapes and stamps in off places.

Quite a few stores will be able to monogram your leather, but only if it’s an item you purchase from them, or if it’s a flat, easily reachable spot.

So swing past, bring in your weird shapes and special gifts, and I’ll find a way. There are even a few options for synthetics and ‘bonded’ leathers.

48 hr turnaround, pricing from $50, and now I have a bunch of cute little symbols and pictures too.

I recently picked up a collection of the coolest little horsehair braids - perfect for key rings, zipper pulls or bag charms. Or if you’re keen let me incorporate one into a hat band for you.

I’ve had some really hun and heartwarming horsehair projects lately that I’ll be sharing soon, so keen to play with more.
