Darrell Thomas Textiles originally opened its doors September 18, 2000 and quickly became well known for providing the most beautiful and original dressmaking textiles in Ottawa, Canada. this store was opened with the purpose of providing the sewing community a boutique with well represented Textiles and Sewing Classes. We opened our first store in the 240 Sparks Shopping Centre, which is located in the downtown core of Ottawa. At this location, we sold high quality textiles for clothing as well as a selection of Home Couture articles such as pillows, throws, and pillars. But after four years, we found that we had outgrown our premises and decided to look for a new home. A charming building with a lot of style and class. At this location, not only do we sell high quality dressmaking textiles and designer buttons (43 000 in stock), but we also offer Sewing classes and a line of designer Clothing. What an incredible surprise and honour!

Yesterday, Tyler Fleming from CTV News visited our store to interview me about the closing of our brick-and-mortar store after 26 wonderful years.  

I was truly touched that our little store in Almonte and the journey we’ve shared with this community were considered worthy of a news story.

After 26 years, there are so many memories and emotions, and I am incredibly grateful to Tyler and CTV News for taking the time to share a little piece of our story.

Our storefront may be closing, but Darrell Thomas Textiles is not closing. Our next chapter continues online.

The timeless beauty of quality Woolens

I have to admit, whenever a new shipment of Liberty of London Tana Lawn arrives, I still get excited opening the boxes. And this latest collection is absolutely beautiful.

Liberty Tana Lawn is an exceptionally fine, lightweight 100% cotton with an almost silky feel. It is incredibly soft against the skin, beautifully breathable and has the most wonderful drape. And because of the quality of the weave, Liberty’s famous prints have extraordinary clarity and colour.

Tana Lawn is wonderful for blouses, shirts, dresses, skirts, summer garments, children’s clothing and so much more. It is lightweight without feeling flimsy, comfortable to wear and, best of all, an absolute pleasure to sew.

A New Chapter for Darrell Thomas Textiles

This is probably one of the most emotional posts I have ever had to write. For 26 years, I have had the privilege of opening the doors of Darrell Thomas Textiles and welcoming you inside.  

What started as a dream on September 18, 2000 became so much more than I could ever have imagined. There have been thousands of bolts of fabric, countless buttons, beautiful garments, sewing advice, laughter, stories and conversations across the cutting table.  But when I look back, what I will remember most is you.

Some of you have been shopping with us almost from the beginning. Some discovered us only recently. And somewhere along the way, so many of you stopped feeling like clients and simply became friends.

And that is why this is so difficult to say…..Our brick-and-mortar store is coming to an end.
But please don’t read that as goodbye.

Darrell Thomas Textiles is NOT closing.

We are changing.  Our beautiful store will be moving online, and I am genuinely excited about what comes next. I will continue searching for those extraordinary fabrics that make you stop and say, “I have to make something out of that!”   There will be new collections, markets, pop-ups, Fibrefest and, knowing me, probably a few ideas I haven’t even thought of yet.

After 26 years, I still love fabric, I still love sewing and I still get excited when a beautiful new bolt arrives and I imagine what one of you might create with it.

So perhaps that is how I know this is the right decision. I’m not ready to stop. I’m simply ready to do it differently.

To everyone who has walked through our doors, supported our little Canadian fabric store, told a friend about us, shopped online, attended an event, supported one of our community fundraisers or simply stopped by to say hello...Thank you.

You made this little dream possible for 26 incredible years. Now I am asking you for just one more thing….

Will you come with me into the next chapter?

Legendary fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie, whose sequined gowns for Cher, Diana Ross, Tina Turner and other stars dazzled red carpets for decades, has sewn his final stitch.

Bob Mackie dressed some of Hollywood’s biggest names over more than 50 years. His creations for celebrities like Carol Burnett, Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand stunned both performers and fans alike, and remain some of the most iconic costumes ever worn. RIP
